… and someone should so inform President Trump.
President Trump, as has been noted in the media, is continuing his persecution of Lisa Cook, Ph.D., current and first Black member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. While there’s much yammering about alleged mortgage fraud, I found this to be of interest in the announcement of a committee to investigate, created by the President:
As President, it is my job to ensure the laws are faithfully executed, including by firing subordinates who cannot be trusted to tell the truth and follow the law.
Here’s the thing: I do not believe Mz Cook is a subordinate. After all, she, and other members of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, can not be fired “at will,” as they say in the private sector; procedures must be followed, on the one hand, to find cause, while on the other members may only serve one full term. The Board serves as an entity independent of the Administration for the good of the Nation, and the President’s relentless railing about dropping interest rates, which, according to the Fed, would make for even worse inflation, demonstrates the wisdom of keeping the Fed independent of Presidents and Administrations, whether said Presidents are feckless or not.
Trying to draw examples from the private sector is a mistake when the context is so different.
Hopefully, during the following legal battles, the use of subordinate will be corrected to a more accurate term. Legal systems often turn on such niceties.
