Pillars

A pillar is a vertical structure holding up a structure above; when we speak of it metaphorically, we mean a core belief which supports other parts of our world view.

The Pillar series of posts are statements about some of the pillars buttressing my world view.  I take this opportunity to write about them in the belief that pillars are often ignored, sometimes not even seen; but an honest life must include examining those pillars, those assumptions, so that they become not just shadowy forms, but solid members that can be intellectually understood.

These are not typical blog posts, but more akin to essays, although they are not necessarily deeply researched.  I try to compose them persuasively; too often, arguments are enunciated in a manner that does not invite the opposition to understand and, perhaps, change their minds, but instead to invite yelps of approval from the chorus.  While, of course, the choral section is appreciated, I’d prefer to know that I’ve provoked someone to think about their position.

I make no claims of originality or insight, of deep or original research, or unique moral authority.  I’ll entertain arguments and corrections, of course; such is the nature of sharing.
