Hadestown: The Musical (2026) is a movie of one production of the aforesaid show, Hadestown. The tale interfaces the romantic tale of Hades and Persephone with that of Orpheus and Eurydice. The former concerns Hades, brother of Zeus, falling in love with Persephone, but her absence causes mother Demeter to send the world into sterility. In the end, Hades permits Persephone, now his queen of the Underworld, to return to the surface for six months of each year.
The latter concerns the kidnapping of Eurydice, beloved of Orpheus, and her travails in Hades. Orpheus boldly descends to find and rescue her, but it’s perilous and tricky.
I enjoyed all the aspects of the movie, from acting to singing to special effects. It is very much a Broadway musical, so if you have a particular allergy to that style of musical, or to Greek tragedies, you should avoid this; otherwise, it’s not bad at all.
