Requiring philosophy for STEM majors would not be a radical reform. Indeed, many Catholic-affiliated universities, including my alma mater, require every student regardless of their major to enroll in at least three philosophy courses while matriculated. Indeed, the requirement is a modest correction—a reintroduction of intellectual infrastructure that has eroded under the pressure of accountability regimes and performance metrics. Taught through concrete scientific case studies rather than abstract texts, such training would make explicit what is currently left implicit: how science knows what it claims to know and where that knowledge legitimately stops.
