On <em><strong>Dead Things<\/strong><\/em>, Gemma Tarlach <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/deadthings\/2017\/05\/09\/meet-zuul-crurivastator-i-aint-fraid-of-no-ankylosaur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remarks<\/a> on a find named\u00a0<em>Zuul crurivastator,\u00a0<\/em>a new member of the ankylosaur, or club-tailed herbivores:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The new-to-science dinosaur\u2019s genus name reflects its block-headed, short-snouted resemblance to <em>Ghostbusters\u2019<\/em>\u00a0Terror Dogs. But that vicious tail club inspired its species name, <em>crurivastator<\/em>, which\u00a0translates to \u201cdestroyer of shins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Destroyer of shins. Heh.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Heh, indeed. But this is a specially cool find:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The virtually complete, partially mummified\u00a0specimen was unearthed in 2014 and is still being prepared. Researchers started at either end (the spectacularly well-preserved skull and tail club) and are working their way toward the middle. Proteins from an estimated 75 millions years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Makes me feel like a kid again.<\/p>\n<p>And, in honor of my late friend Nancy, who loved to eat dinner with a bunch of computer geeks and listen to them geek out (her eyes would cross and she&#8217;d start drooling, she claimed), here&#8217;s a bit of tech talk from the academic paper, <a href=\"http:\/\/rsos.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/4\/5\/161086\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from<\/a>\u00a0<em><strong>The <\/strong><strong><em>Royal<\/em> Society<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"\">6. Skull<\/h2>\n<p id=\"p-36\">The skull is complete, missing only the tip of the right quadratojugal horn and the ventral edge of the vomers (figures\u00a0<a id=\"xref-fig-2-3\" class=\"xref-fig\" href=\"http:\/\/rsos.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/4\/5\/161086#F2\">2<\/a>, <a id=\"xref-fig-3-2\" class=\"xref-fig\" href=\"http:\/\/rsos.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/4\/5\/161086#F3\">3<\/a> and <a id=\"xref-fig-5-1\" class=\"xref-fig\" href=\"http:\/\/rsos.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/4\/5\/161086#F5\">5<\/a>). The skull has undergone plastic deformation, with some dorsoventral compaction and mediolateral skewing evidenced by the bilateral asymmetry of the skull overall, and flattened, oval orbits [<a id=\"xref-ref-33-1\" class=\"xref-bibr\" href=\"http:\/\/rsos.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/4\/5\/161086#ref-33\">33<\/a>]. The lateral sides of the snout taper gently towards a squared-off premaxillary beak. Laterally, the skull is relatively flat dorsally, unlike the arched profile of some specimens of <em>Euoplocephalus<\/em>, <em>Anodontosaurus<\/em>, <em>Scolosaurus<\/em> and <em>Ziapelta<\/em>, but this might result from taphonomic compaction of the skull. As in other ankylosaurines, the antorbital fenestra is absent and the supratemporal fenestrae are obscured. In dorsal view, the skull has a trapezoidal outline. Apart from the three known skulls of <em>Ankylosaurus<\/em> (AMNH 5214, AMNH 5895 and CMN 8880), ROM 75860 is the largest ankylosaurine skull recovered from Laramidia (<a id=\"xref-table-wrap-1-1\" class=\"xref-table\" href=\"http:\/\/rsos.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/4\/5\/161086#T1\">table\u00a01<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Of the 4 footed, millions of years old variety.
