The pelagic zone can be thought of in terms of an imaginary cylinder or <a title=\"Water column\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Water_column\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Water_column&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1492731915452000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG3_TCF0hH1ZowfR57hhUWSjG3dOw\">water column<\/a> that goes from the surface of the sea almost to the bottom. Conditions differ deeper in the water column such that as pressure increases with depth, the temperature drops and less light penetrates. Depending on the depth, the water column, rather like the <a title=\"Atmosphere of Earth\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atmosphere_of_Earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atmosphere_of_Earth&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1492731915452000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFIiBd_0BvoNSGHtfw2KWieTLNEJg\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>, may be divided into different layers.<\/p>\n<p>The pelagic zone occupies 1,330 million km<sup>3<\/sup> (320 million mi<sup>3<\/sup>) with a mean depth of 3.68\u00a0km (2.29\u00a0mi) and maximum depth of 11\u00a0km (6.8\u00a0mi). [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pelagic_zone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pelagic_zone&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1492731915452000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHn1xLj5P3BRMWDyx5eIgj9L2-i0A\"><i><b>Wikipedia<\/b><\/i><\/a>]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Noted in &#8220;<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/srep45750\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/srep45750&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1492731915452000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHI4Xyd63Oe8ZUZj3NpHtLS3ze8gA\">Quantification of bioluminescence from the surface to the deep sea demonstrates its predominance as an ecological trait<\/a><\/i>,&#8221; S\u00e9verine Martini &amp; Steven H.
