{"id":8976,"date":"2017-04-09T09:17:40","date_gmt":"2017-04-09T14:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=8976"},"modified":"2017-04-09T09:17:40","modified_gmt":"2017-04-09T14:17:40","slug":"word-of-the-day-126","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2017\/04\/09\/word-of-the-day-126\/","title":{"rendered":"Word of the Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Metamer<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In <a title=\"Colorimetry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colorimetry\">colorimetry<\/a>, <b>metamerism<\/b> is a perceived matching of the colors that, based on differences in <a title=\"Spectral power distribution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spectral_power_distribution\">spectral power distribution<\/a>, do not actually match. Colors that match this way are called <b>metamers<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>A spectral power distribution describes the proportion of total light given off (emitted, transmitted, or reflected) by a color sample at each visible wavelength; it defines the complete information about the light coming from the sample. However, the human eye contains only three color receptors (three types of <a title=\"Cone cell\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cone_cell\">cone cells<\/a>), which means that all colors are reduced to three sensory quantities, called the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Tristimulus value\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tristimulus_value\">tristimulus values<\/a>. Metamerism occurs because each type of cone responds to the cumulative energy from a broad range of wavelengths, so that different combinations of light across all wavelengths can produce an equivalent receptor response and the same tristimulus values or color sensation. In color science, such sensations are numerically represented by color matching functions. [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metamerism_(color)\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/em><\/a>]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which helps me make sense of where I saw it in use, which is &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg23331184-700-special-glasses-give-people-superhuman-colour-vision\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Special glasses give people superhuman colour vision<\/em><\/a>,&#8221; Chris Baraniuk, <em><strong>NewScientist<\/strong><\/em> (25 March 2017):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>IT\u2019S sometimes practically impossible to tell similar hues apart, even placed side by side. Special glasses could improve our ability to do so, and could one day help to spot counterfeits.<\/p>\n<p>Devised by a team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the glasses basically enhance the user\u2019s colour vision. They allow us to see metamers \u2013 colours that look the same but give off different wavelengths of light \u2013 as recognisably distinct hues.<\/p>\n<p>Human colour vision relies on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn27015-dragonfly-eyes-see-the-world-in-ultra-multicolour\/\">three types of cone cells<\/a> that react to short (blue), medium (green) and long (red) wavelengths. While brushing up on his knowledge of the eye before teaching a photonics class, physicist <a href=\"http:\/\/katsgroup.ece.wisc.edu\/\">Mikhail Kats<\/a> had a brainwave. Could the eye be tricked into effectively having another type of cone cell?<\/p>\n<p>To make the glasses, Kats and his colleagues designed two colour filters, one for each eye, that strip out specific parts of the blue light spectrum. The team hypothesised that giving each eye slightly different information about blue things would simulate a new set of blue cones, making any subtle colour differences more pronounced. They were right (<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1703.04392\">arxiv.org\/abs\/1703.04392<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>They tested the effect using blocks of colour, displayed on a computer and smartphone screen, that people see as metamers. \u201cThey look exactly the same, and you look through the spectacles and\u2026 holy crap, they\u2019re two different things,\u201d says Kats.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although I still think the summary of metamer in here is still clumsy and confusing.
