{"id":8797,"date":"2017-03-29T17:52:35","date_gmt":"2017-03-29T22:52:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=8797"},"modified":"2017-03-29T17:52:35","modified_gmt":"2017-03-29T22:52:35","slug":"lithosphere-mapping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2017\/03\/29\/lithosphere-mapping\/","title":{"rendered":"Lithosphere Mapping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em><strong>European Space Agency<\/strong><\/em> has been working on mapping the Earth&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lithosphere\" target=\"_blank\">lithosphere<\/a><\/em> &#8211; the rigid, outermost layer of the Earth &#8211; by measuring its magnetic characteristics using its <a href=\"http:\/\/m.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Observing_the_Earth\/Swarm\/Introducing_Swarm\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Swarm<\/strong><\/em> mission<\/a>, and has now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Observing_the_Earth\/Swarm\/Unravelling_Earth_s_magnetic_field\" target=\"_blank\">released a map<\/a> (including an interesting, unembeddable video):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"width: 315px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.esa.int\/var\/esa\/storage\/images\/esa_multimedia\/images\/2017\/03\/magnetic_anomaly_bangui\/16867528-1-eng-GB\/Magnetic_anomaly_Bangui_medium.jpg?resize=305%2C305\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"305\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Magnetic anomaly: Bangui<br \/>Image Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Observing_the_Earth\/Swarm\/Unravelling_Earth_s_magnetic_field\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ESA<\/strong><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Earth\u2019s magnetic field can be thought of as a huge cocoon, protecting us from cosmic radiation and charged particles that bombard our planet in solar wind. Without it, life as we know it would not exist.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the field is generated at depths greater than 3000 km by the movement of molten iron in the outer core. The remaining 6% is partly due to electrical currents in space surrounding Earth, and partly due to magnetised rocks in the upper lithosphere \u2013 the rigid outer part of Earth, consisting of the crust and upper mantle.<\/p>\n<p>Although this \u2018lithospheric magnetic field\u2019 is very weak and therefore difficult to detect from space, the Swarm trio is able to map its magnetic signals.
