{"id":8747,"date":"2017-03-26T16:54:27","date_gmt":"2017-03-26T21:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=8747"},"modified":"2017-03-26T16:54:27","modified_gmt":"2017-03-26T21:54:27","slug":"they-make-us-strong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2017\/03\/26\/they-make-us-strong\/","title":{"rendered":"They Make Us Strong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Andrew Sullivan is out with his weekly <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/2017\/03\/sullivan-is-political-gravity-finally-sinking-donald-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\">missive<\/a>, including ruminations on how Trump is serving to separate true conservatives from expedient conservatives, and that provoked some thoughts that this may indicate a basic flaw in today&#8217;s American conservative philosophy &#8211; but I shan&#8217;t pursue that, someone with more qualifications should. But I&#8217;d like to respond to his last section:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The response of Americans to terror is to be terrified \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\">9\/11<\/a>\u2019s trauma has never been fully exorcised. Until we get over that, until we manage to stiffen our upper lips like the Brits, jihadist terrorists will exercise control over the American psyche like no one else. We can do better, can\u2019t we? If we want the Constitution to survive both Islamism\u2019s threat and the potential response of a beleaguered Trump, we\u2019ll have to.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My response is one I&#8217;ve written before, in the context of the <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2017\/03\/07\/rehabilitating-the-scorned-might-get-you-scorned\/\" target=\"_blank\">rehabilitation of that sad traitor to American tradition<\/a>, Senator Joe McCarthy, and so I&#8217;ll just quote it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This attack on two of our pillars of civil society \u2013 the right to think and speak what one wants, and not to be falsely accused and maligned by government actors \u2013 are not to be set aside at the paranoid ravings of <i>anyone<\/i>. I recently ran across a quote of President Trump\u2019s from 1989: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2016\/07\/01\/civil_liberties_be_damned_donald_trump_an_enemy_of_the_constitution\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2016\/07\/01\/civil_liberties_be_damned_donald_trump_an_enemy_of_the_constitution\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1489031187138000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG-Sa1MJ9m5GevovgY002IZtBtpzg\"><i>CIVIL LIBERTIES END WHEN AN ATTACK ON OUR SAFETY BEGINS<\/i><\/a>!\u201d While I\u2019m aware this can be read in more than one way, I\u2019ll choose the most negative and reply, \u201c<b>No, Mr. President, our Civil Liberties give us a <i>critical bulwark <\/i>in our quest for safety, and he who advocates for their removal or neutering is nothing more than a traitor to the United States<\/b>.\u201d Think about it \u2013 our civil liberties are not luxuries, not privileges, but instead they are what safeguard us from the deprivations of tyrants, foreign and domestic. So long as we safeguard them, we\u2019ll stand a better chance of survival in freedom, than we would without.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The implied choice of either safety or civil liberties is a false choice.
