This process creates a film of the <i>adsorbate<\/i> on the surface of the <i>adsorbent<\/i>. This process differs from <a title=\"Absorption (chemistry)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Absorption_%28chemistry%29\">absorption<\/a>, in which a <a title=\"Fluid\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fluid\">fluid<\/a> (the <i>absorbate<\/i>) is <a title=\"Dissolution (chemistry)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dissolution_%28chemistry%29\">dissolved<\/a> by or <a title=\"Permeation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Permeation\">permeates<\/a> a liquid or solid (the <i>absorbent<\/i>), respectively. Adsorption is a surface-based process while absorption involves the whole volume of the material. The term <i><a title=\"Sorption\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sorption\">sorption<\/a><\/i> encompasses both processes, while <i><a title=\"Desorption\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Desorption\">desorption<\/a><\/i> is the reverse of it. Adsorption is a <i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Surface phenomenon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surface_phenomenon\">surface phenomenon<\/a><\/i>.
