{"id":8574,"date":"2017-03-15T08:07:25","date_gmt":"2017-03-15T13:07:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=8574"},"modified":"2017-03-15T08:07:25","modified_gmt":"2017-03-15T13:07:25","slug":"support-in-and-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2017\/03\/15\/support-in-and-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Support, In And Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While it has little impact on the Trump Administration, it&#8217;s interesting to hear that Iraqi minority Christian religious groups are beginning to lose faith in him, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2017\/02\/donald-trump-visa-ban-iraq-minorities.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2017\/02\/donald-trump-visa-ban-iraq-minorities.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1489617767515000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFte4cHvZngSM-n6tN4cNjChBTlrQ\">reported <\/a>by Sam Kimball for <i><b>AL Monitor<\/b><\/i>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>Some 12 miles\u00a0north of al-Qosh,\u00a0in the Iraqi Kurdistan city of Dahuk,\u00a0Father Emanuel Youkhana, an Assyrian priest, explained the logic behind many Iraqi Christians\u2019 support for Trump\u2019s candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandfather survived the [Ottoman] genocide of Assyrians in 1915, in which hundreds of thousands died,\u201d said Youkhana. \u201cMy father survived the massacre of Simele [in\u00a0Iraq] in 1933. Now 100 years later, people like me and my community are trying to survive IS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A history of persecution from Ottoman times to the present\u00a0and the recent wave of violence across Iraq have made local\u00a0Christians desperate for anyone who appears to have the\u00a0power to help them. \u201cSo\u00a0of course\u00a0[the Assyrians] will live this illusion of a savior,\u201d Youkhana said bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>He dismissed the idea that Trump\u2019s executive order is Islamophobic, claiming that Western countries have been hamstrung in their efforts to combat terrorism because of political correctness.\u00a0\u201cThere is naive thinking among Western countries, who are trying to beautify this thing called Islamic terror,\u201d he said. \u201cBut in my country, Islamic terrorism has a name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the current situation, Youkhana believes that Christians should be helped to stay in Iraq. Facilitating their resettlement elsewhere, he said, would be aiding the sectarian project of extremist militants, who wish to see the country emptied of minority religious groups.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s preoccupation with domestic affairs is no service to folks in other countries hoping for help from his Administration, and I suppose those who oppose him domestically &#8211; which is more than half the United States &#8211; are not doing them any short-term favors, either. But it&#8217;s hard to prioritize foreign countries when your own country, a bulwark of freedom, is at risk from within in the eyes of so many American citizens. I hope the best for them, as we all try to get through this life, but I fear for the worst.
