This is hardly the biggest issue in his budget, and I&#8217;ll grant that the current allocation for lead cleanup is so pitiful that a 30 percent cut hardly matters. On principle, though, it&#8217;s obvious that Mick Mulvaney&#8217;s crew just saw a line item in their spreadsheet and slashed it without knowing anything about it. Nice work, folks. You get a gold star.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He suggests that the use of punishment is futile. You have to like his chart.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.motherjones.com\/files\/blog_acs_lead_crime_0.jpg?resize=630%2C506\" width=\"630\" height=\"506\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I wonder about the size of the standard deviation in the blood level measurements. Curious concerning lead&#8217;s effects on the body? Here&#8217;s the <em><strong>Agency for Toxic Substances &amp; Disease Registry<\/strong><\/em>, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/csem\/csem.asp?csem=7&amp;po=10\" target=\"_blank\">lesson plan format<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It must be emphasized that <strong>there may be no threshold<\/strong> for developmental effects on children.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The practicing health care provider can distinguish overt clinical symptoms and health effects that come with high exposure levels on an individual basis.<\/li>\n<li>However, lack of overt symptoms does not mean \u201cno lead poisoning.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Lower levels of exposure have been shown to have many subtle health effects.<\/li>\n<li>Some researchers have suggested that lead continues to contribute significantly to socio-behavioral problems such as juvenile delinquency and violent crime (Needleman 2002, Nevin 2000).<\/li>\n<li>It is important to prevent all lead exposures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While the immediate health effect of concern in children is typically neurological, it is important to remember that childhood lead poisoning can lead to health effects later in life including renal effects, hypertension, reproductive problems, and developmental problems with their offspring (see below).
