{"id":8258,"date":"2017-02-24T08:46:16","date_gmt":"2017-02-24T14:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=8258"},"modified":"2017-02-24T08:46:16","modified_gmt":"2017-02-24T14:46:16","slug":"not-missing-a-bet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2017\/02\/24\/not-missing-a-bet\/","title":{"rendered":"Not Missing A Bet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This perhaps obscure 4th Circuit Appeals court loss for the <em><strong>GOP<\/strong><\/em> I found interesting as a reflection of their strategy of <i>straight ticket voting <\/i>&#8211; a strategy which I&#8217;ve discussed before and have concluded that it is <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2017\/01\/28\/race-2016-power-politics-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">damaging to the American polity<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richmond.com\/news\/virginia\/appeals-court-dismisses-virginia-case-seeking-party-id-in-local\/article_7ce5f4fb-37b9-5a16-8525-67062205a4db.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.richmond.com\/news\/virginia\/appeals-court-dismisses-virginia-case-seeking-party-id-in-local\/article_7ce5f4fb-37b9-5a16-8525-67062205a4db.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1487981806327000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFSGzjv7LInuIANTtqifmBKE85KLw\">From <\/a>the <i><b>Richmond Times-Dispatch<\/b><\/i>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\">\n<div class=\"m_2313142392703783799gmail-subscriber-preview\">\n<p>A federal appeals court has dismissed a challenge to a Virginia law prohibiting partisan labels on ballots in local elections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"m_2313142392703783799gmail-subscriber-preview\">\n<p>In an opinion published <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1905622683\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Tuesday<\/span><\/span>, the Richmond-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the <a title=\"http:\/\/www.richmond.com\/news\/virginia\/article_f66f9347-8b6b-5013-9693-62ff6404916f.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.richmond.com\/news\/virginia\/article_f66f9347-8b6b-5013-9693-62ff6404916f.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.richmond.com\/news\/virginia\/article_f66f9347-8b6b-5013-9693-62ff6404916f.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1487981806327000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGBPiII6H47df5R-IXlEWuqo6ndFg\">case brought by a group of Powhatan County Republicans<\/a> and found the state has a legitimate interest in minimizing political partisanship in local races.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"m_2313142392703783799gmail-subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cWhile party identifiers do not appear on the official ballot for Virginia\u2019s local candidates, the candidates still have every other avenue by which to inform voters of this information,\u201d Judge Paul Niemeyer wrote in the three-judge panel\u2019s unanimous opinion affirming a lower court\u2019s earlier ruling. \u201cPolitical parties and their nominees are entirely free to publicize their association with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"m_2313142392703783799gmail-subscriber-only\">\n<p>The plaintiffs argued the ballot rules serve little real purpose because, in many cases, local races are nonpartisan in name only and nothing in state law prevents political parties from nominating local candidates or making informal endorsements. The lack of party information on the ballot, they argued, only sows confusion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\">\n<div class=\"m_2313142392703783799gmail-subscriber-only\">\n<p>The plaintiffs, the Powhatan County Republican Committee and four candidates it endorsed in a 2015 Board of Supervisors election, claimed the ballot rule violates constitutional rights to freedom of association and equal protection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"m_2313142392703783799gmail-subscriber-only\">\n<p>By making the party affiliations apparent, this reminds forgetful GOP voters <b>not <\/b>of the identity of the GOP endorsed candidates &#8211; but that they&#8217;re supposed to be voting single ticket, rather than actually employing their critical faculties concerning the candidates themselves. Another tool in the box of tactics for the <em><strong>GOP<\/strong><\/em> which benefits them, but damages the nation as it makes it easier for gross incompetents to win elections and start wielding power.<\/p>\n<p>To be perfectly clear, a competent, moderate Republican is just fine with me. I might vote for such a candidate, particularly if the opposition candidates strike me as incompetent, lustful for power, or have some other hidden agenda.
