{"id":7674,"date":"2017-01-16T17:30:25","date_gmt":"2017-01-16T23:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=7674"},"modified":"2017-01-16T17:30:25","modified_gmt":"2017-01-16T23:30:25","slug":"obama-over-the-pond-assessment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2017\/01\/16\/obama-over-the-pond-assessment\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama Over The Pond Assessment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gary Younge at <em><strong>The Guardian<\/strong><\/em> would have us believe that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2017\/jan\/16\/how-barack-obama-paved-way-donald-trump-racism?CMP=edit_2221\" target=\"_blank\">Obama&#8217;s to blame<\/a> for the failure of the Democrats to capture the Presidency, and the core mistake was how the <strong>Great Recession<\/strong> was handled:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There is a deeper connection, however, between Trump\u2019s rise and what Obama did \u2013 or rather didn\u2019t do \u2013 economically. He entered the White House at a moment of economic crisis, with <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2008\/nov\/06\/us-elections-2008-democrats-congress-house-representatives\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Democratic majorities in both Houses<\/a> and bankers on the back foot. Faced with the choice of preserving the financial industry as it was or embracing far-reaching reforms that would have served the interests of those who voted for him, <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/posteverything\/wp\/2017\/01\/12\/democrats-cant-win-until-they-recognize-how-bad-obamas-financial-policies-were\/?postshare=5001484345169471&amp;tid=ss_tw&amp;utm_term=.350e05014673\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">he chose<\/a> the former.<\/p>\n<p>Just a couple of months into his first term he called a meeting of banking executives. \u201cThe president had us at a moment of real vulnerability,\u201d one of them told Ron Suskind in <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/09\/19\/books\/ron-suskinds-confidence-men-focuses-on-obama-review.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">his book Confidence Men<\/a>. \u201cAt that point, he could have ordered us to do just about anything and we would have rolled over. But he didn\u2019t \u2013 he mostly wanted to help us out, to quell the mob.\u201d People lost their homes while bankers kept their bonuses and banks kept their profits.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Without referencing the implications of his argument &#8211; that Obama should have restructured the banking system somehow &#8211; I have to question whether all these voters who allegedly skipped this election really <em>knew<\/em> that he had an option to do so &#8211; if in fact he really did have such an option.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the thing &#8211; political columnists tend to know more, and impute more knowledge to the masses, than the masses actually possess. Look at the polls concerning how Obama has done vs how the American electorate thinks he&#8217;s done. Steve Benen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/the-persistence-the-reality-gap-matters\" target=\"_blank\">constructs<\/a> a nice graph from data supplied by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicpolicypolling.com\/pdf\/2015\/PPP_Release_National_51116.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Public Policy Polling<\/strong><\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 685px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.msnbc.com\/sites\/msnbc\/files\/styles\/embedded_image\/public\/5.12.16.jpg?resize=675%2C338\" width=\"675\" height=\"338\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>May 2016<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>This is just one example<\/em>. The place where the boots hit the road is the information in the possession of voters. I do not believe Younge has learned the lesson that Trump seems to know quite well &#8211; the reality doesn&#8217;t matter, <em>it&#8217;s what the voters think is reality<\/em>. Remember his relentless beating of the drum about violent crime? The worst in decades!<\/p>\n<p>Or was it? From <em><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/em> and The <em><strong>Pew Research Center<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/FT_15.10.13_gunViolence.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7675 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/FT_15.10.13_gunViolence.jpg?resize=310%2C798&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"798\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/FT_15.10.13_gunViolence.jpg?w=310&amp;ssl=1 310w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/FT_15.10.13_gunViolence.jpg?resize=117%2C300&amp;ssl=1 117w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/FT_15.10.13_gunViolence.jpg?resize=58%2C150&amp;ssl=1 58w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/a>And then Trump suggested the numbers were false. <em>He understands.<\/em> It&#8217;s all about what the voters believed was true, not the actual realities.<\/p>\n<p>And while the voters may have been outraged that the banking system was not dismembered at the time, we should remember that healthcare reform was the priority of the Democrats, not banking. The result of the <em><strong>ACA<\/strong><\/em>, in measurable metrics, has been good so far, even as the GOP tries to put on its 20 fathom boots in order to destroy it.<\/p>\n<p>So the question is, how to get the proper information to voters? While it&#8217;ll pain Obama to see the ACA destroyed, its immediate negative effect on many citizens may turn out to be a positive &#8211; teaching citizens to fucking pay attention to who you&#8217;re voting.
