{"id":7471,"date":"2017-01-01T18:57:14","date_gmt":"2017-01-02T00:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=7471"},"modified":"2017-01-01T18:57:14","modified_gmt":"2017-01-02T00:57:14","slug":"lasers-and-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2017\/01\/01\/lasers-and-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Lasers and Fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>The Crux<\/strong><\/em> of <em><strong>Discover Magazine<\/strong><\/em> publishes Jon Tennant&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/crux\/2016\/12\/20\/paleontology-lasers-fossils\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> of the use of lasers on fossils, and how they can reveal the soft tissue chemistry of the original creature &#8211; and when a fossil has actually been assembled from several creatures:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When the team fired its laser at a\u00a0<em>Microraptor <\/em>specimen, from the fossil graveyards of Liaoning, China, it lit up like a galaxy. What to the human eye appears as a rather mashed-up bird on a boring slab of rock, LSF transforms into a psychedelic horror show. Intriguingly, the skull of this particular specimen fluoresces in a way that suggests it could be a composite, with part of the skull added from another specimen.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/crux\/files\/2016\/12\/Microraptor-765x1024.jpg?resize=765%2C1024\" width=\"765\" height=\"1024\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A skull composite? (Credit: http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1371\/journal.pone.0125923.g013)<br \/>(Verbatim from <strong>The Crux<\/strong>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cTom [Kaye] and I have laser-imaged thousands of dinosaur fossils and, aside from revealing soft tissue and bone details that were previously \u2018invisible\u2019 or unclear, it has helped us to identify potential composite specimens,\u201d says [Mike] Pittman. \u201cIn these specimens, we see specific bones or slabs that have fluorescence colors that are amiss from the rest of the specimen. We can then explore further using other instruments (e.g. CT scanning) to confirm if it has been compiled from the parts of several specimens.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In all fairness, I have used <em>fraud<\/em> in a slightly unfair manner. Not all fossils are embedded in rock, and even those that are quite often come from disarticulated skeletons; assemblage must be a bit of a guessing game if they come from a bone bed (i.e., area where more than one carcass was located). Scale bar 1 cm. http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1371\/journal.pone.0125923.g006&#8243;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A very small specimen (<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0125923#pone-0125923-g006\">Fig 6<\/a>) was discovered on the same slab as a <em>Microraptor<\/em> specimen (Theropoda: Dromaeosauridae [<a class=\"ref-tip\" href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0125923#pone.0125923.ref020\">20<\/a>]) discovered in Liaoning province, China (LVH 0026). The visible bones were not sufficient to identify the specimen, so it was submitted for laser analysis as a last resort. Laser fluorescence identified the specimen as a fish within minutes. In this case the hydroxyapatite in the bones and teeth fluoresced at a higher intensity than the surrounding matrix. The higher intensity fluorescent reaction of the specimen, in comparison to the matrix, revealed teeth below the surface and transparent scales on the surface that were virtually invisible in reflected light (<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0125923#pone-0125923-g007\">Fig 7<\/a>). Note that the bone fragment on the right in <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0125923#pone-0125923-g007\">Fig 7<\/a> actually lies under the scale.
