{"id":7447,"date":"2016-12-31T09:58:58","date_gmt":"2016-12-31T15:58:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=7447"},"modified":"2016-12-31T09:58:58","modified_gmt":"2016-12-31T15:58:58","slug":"word-of-the-day-66","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2016\/12\/31\/word-of-the-day-66\/","title":{"rendered":"Word of the Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>ectogenesis<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Ectogenesis<\/b> (from the <a title=\"Greek language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greek_language\">Greek<\/a> <i>ecto<\/i>, &#8220;outer,&#8221; and <i><a class=\"extiw\" title=\"wikt:genesis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/genesis\">genesis<\/a><\/i>) is the growth of an organism in an artificial environment<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ectogenesis#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> outside the body in which it would normally be found, such as the growth of an <a title=\"Embryo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Embryo\">embryo<\/a> or <a title=\"Fetus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fetus\">fetus<\/a> outside the mother&#8217;s body, or the growth of bacteria outside the body of a host.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ectogenesis#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> The term was coined by British scientist <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"J.B.S. Haldane\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J.B.S._Haldane\">J.B.S. Haldane<\/a> in 1924. <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ectogenesis\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Encountered on <em><strong>The Crux<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/crux\/2016\/12\/13\/human-reproductive-technology-advances\" target=\"_blank\">by<\/a> David Warmflash:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 1924, British physiologist\u00a0and geneticist John Burdon Sanderson Haldane coined the term <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ectogenesis\">ectogenesis<\/a><\/em>. Haldane was thinking of an artificial process in which development, from fertilization to birth, could occur outside of a woman\u2019s body.<\/p>\n<p>He described ectogenesis in a work called <em>Daedalus<\/em>, where he predicted that about 70 percent of human babies would be born this way by the year 2074.
