It is caused by the <a title=\"Gravity\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gravity\">gravitational<\/a> forces of other nearby bodies acting upon the spinning object. Although they are essentially the same effect operating over different timescales, astronomers usually make a distinction between <i><a title=\"Axial precession\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Axial_precession\">precession<\/a><\/i>, which is a steady long-term change in the axis of rotation, and <i>nutation<\/i>, which is the combined effect of similar shorter-term variations.
