Turns out they keep an eye on retracted papers. From a quick interview with <em><strong>FiveThirtyEight<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The first Retraction Watch post was titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2010\/08\/03\/why-write-a-blog-about-retractions\/\">Why write a blog about retractions?<\/a>\u201d Five years later, the answer seems self-evident: Because without a concerted effort to pay attention, nobody will notice what was wrong in the first place. \u201cI thought we might do one post a month,\u201d Marcus told me. \u201cI don\u2019t think either of us thought it would become two or three a day.\u201d But after an interview on public radio and media attention highlighting the blog\u2019s coverage of <a href=\"http:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2010\/08\/10\/monkey-business-2002-cognition-paper-retracted-as-prominent-psychologist-marc-hauser-takes-leave-from-harvard\/\">Marc Hauser, a Harvard psychologist caught fabricating data<\/a>, the tips started rolling in. \u201cWhat became clear is that there was a very large number of people in science who were frustrated with the way that misconduct was being handled, and these people found us very quickly,\u201d Oransky said.
