Rather than referring to a particular mineral with a specific <em>chemical<\/em> composition, plagioclase is a continuous <a title=\"Solid solution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solid_solution\">solid solution<\/a> series, more properly known as the <b>plagioclase feldspar<\/b> series (from the Ancient Greek for &#8220;oblique fracture&#8221;, in reference to its two <a title=\"Cleavage (crystal)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cleavage_(crystal)\">cleavage<\/a> angles).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Seen in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg23231024-300-moondust-cake-mix-shows-moon-may-have-had-water-from-the-start\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Moon-dust cake mix shows moon may have had water from the start<\/em><\/a>&#8220;, by Andy Coghlan, <em><strong>NewScientist<\/strong><\/em> (3 December 2016):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Only when water was included in the mix, at levels of just 0.5 to 1 per cent by weight, did the types and amounts of rock formed match those that have been observed on the moon.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, the water-based mixture generated a layer of plagioclase \u2013 the main component of the crust \u2013 that when extrapolated to the moon would be around 34 to 43 kilometres thick, matching the average thickness measured with satellites. Dry mixtures led to a plagioclase layer twice as deep.
