{"id":7209,"date":"2016-12-16T17:44:24","date_gmt":"2016-12-16T23:44:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=7209"},"modified":"2016-12-16T17:44:24","modified_gmt":"2016-12-16T23:44:24","slug":"boycotting-the-x-wing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2016\/12\/16\/boycotting-the-x-wing\/","title":{"rendered":"Boycotting the X-Wing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I heard Colbert making jokes about the white supremacist movement boycotting the latest <em><strong>Star Wars<\/strong><\/em> movie, I thought he was kidding and forgot about it. But, no, it&#8217;s a real thing, as Emma Grey Ellis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2016\/12\/rogue-one-alt-right-boycott\/\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> in <em><strong>Wired.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0She\u00a0concludes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The alt-right aren\u2019t the first extremist group to use this strategy. \u201cThere are clear points of comparison with how the Klan protested against film in the 1920s,\u201d says Tim Rice, a film studies lecturer at St. Andrews University and author of White Robes, Silver Screens: Movies and the Making of the Ku Klux Klan. \u201cThese protests\u2014then and now\u2014seek to position the group as an underdog and the threatened minority.\u201d And, just like the Klan, the alt-right holds up media as a symbol of the problem, so any criticism they receive can be dismissed, or used to reinforce their arguments.<\/p>\n<p>But the KKK cracked up, and so will the alt-right. The group is already splintering into rival factions, and their ambition far outweighs their power. The group\u2019s last big boycott called for people to #DumpKelloggs after the brand pulled its ads from Breitbart, and that call to action hasn\u2019t halted Special K consumption. It\u2019s doubtful that the fringe group will have any more impact on Star Wars\u2014let alone Disney\u2014than they did on the cereal giant.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Story-teller.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7210 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Story-teller.jpg?resize=366%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"366\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Story-teller.jpg?w=435&amp;ssl=1 435w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Story-teller.jpg?resize=300%2C164&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Story-teller.jpg?resize=250%2C137&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Story-teller.jpg?resize=150%2C82&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px\" \/><\/a>I see this as a recognition by the supremacists of the power of storytelling &#8211; and their natural dread\u00a0of it. They realize that the story will depict some awful\u00a0fate that may await supremacists in any galaxy, and that the story will make an argument that such a fate is <em>inevitable<\/em>. Just as evil quite often breaks into self-defeating factions, as Ellis reports the supremacists are exhibiting at this early date, the story makes assertions that will discourage future potential recruits from joining the supremacists&#8217; little hate groups. And if their little hate groups don&#8217;t grow, then the leaders are stuck with their little teacup of power, their influence will remain static and begin to wane, and &#8230; the country will end up laughing at them.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Rogue One<\/strong><\/em> may be the first strike in the war against the supremacists, but it&#8217;s a lot more civilized than the last time we had to deal with white supremacists.<\/p>\n<p>That was called The American Civil War.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I heard Colbert making jokes about the white supremacist movement boycotting the latest Star Wars movie, I thought he was kidding and forgot about it.
