That number includes a\u00a095 percent drop in\u00a0the number of\u00a0district hospitals, from\u00a02,631 to\u00a0only 124, and\u00a0a 65 percent decline in\u00a0the number of\u00a0local health clinics, from\u00a07,404 to\u00a02,561. &#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But it gets worse.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The\u00a0Audit Chamber reports that some regions even lack mobile medical teams to\u00a0provide care in\u00a0remote areas. When local train service was canceled to\u00a0many smaller towns in\u00a0the winter of\u00a02013-14, residents of\u00a0tiny Novosokolniki, Nevel and\u00a0Opochka in\u00a0the southern Pskov region literally lay down on\u00a0the railroad tracks to\u00a0force passing trains to\u00a0stop and\u00a0carry them to\u00a0cities with hospitals.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But it gets even worse.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In\u00a0fact, the\u00a0&#8220;optimization&#8221; process has affected not only &#8220;unprofitable&#8221; medical facilities, but even those with the\u00a0latest equipment and\u00a0the most highly qualified personnel.
