The building it&#8217;s housed in is the first of the &#8220;jewel box&#8221; buildings built by the architect <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Sullivan\" target=\"_blank\">Louis Sullivan<\/a>, originally constructed\u00a0to house a branch of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Farmer%27s_Bank_of_Owatonna\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>National Farmer&#8217;s Bank<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. To the right is the pic of the outside from <em><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/em>. It&#8217;s certainly an unusual structure; decorated to convince its depositors that their\u00a0treasure was safe inside this ornate\u00a0chest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7022 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1.jpg?resize=800%2C349&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"1\" width=\"800\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1.jpg?w=873&amp;ssl=1 873w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1.jpg?resize=300%2C131&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1.jpg?resize=768%2C335&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1.jpg?resize=250%2C109&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1.jpg?resize=150%2C65&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A walk north up the street (a cold, windy walk) revealed a couple of other buildings with pretty awesome art deco detailing\u00a0as well.\u00a0 We saw the same art deco\u00a0fruit and nut border motif\u00a0on the <em><strong>Federated Insurance<\/strong><\/em> HQ building across the street from the bank, albeit the borders were not\u00a0of the same quality as those they were imitating.<\/p>\n<p>As spectacular as the outside of the box is, it&#8217;s the inside of the building that really sparkles. In our case, I think it was the assistant manager, although I could never quite get a look at his name badge.\u00a0 He seemed to know just about anything &#8211; but, he admitted, he&#8217;d never tracked down the cost, in 1908 dollars, of putting the structure up. (Our research indicates that Sullivan and his team of craftsmen built the National Farmers\u2019 Bank of Owatonna building in 1908 for $125,000 \u2014 more than $3 million in today\u2019s dollars.) Otherwise,\u00a0our guide\u00a0had dates, construction and material details, symbology, past and future restoration projects and plans, and an appreciation of this part of his job: he clearly enjoyed the interaction. Better yet, there&#8217;s a balcony, positioned directly over the tellers&#8217; station, which provides an excellent view.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/CAM00871.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6989 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/CAM00871.jpg?resize=143%2C178&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"cam00871\" width=\"143\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/CAM00871.jpg?w=1580&amp;ssl=1 1580w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/CAM00871.jpg?resize=241%2C300&amp;ssl=1 241w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/CAM00871.jpg?resize=768%2C957&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/CAM00871.jpg?resize=822%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 822w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/CAM00871.jpg?resize=120%2C150&amp;ssl=1 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 143px) 100vw, 143px\" \/><\/a>All of our pictures were taken of the inside of the bank, and, sadly, some didn&#8217;t come out well, so I post those that did only to give a reason for having taken them.\u00a0 This first one shows the medallion over the entrance to the bank, and while the picture is of not good quality, it does indicate the decorations of the bank are on an intricate agricultural theme: nuts and berries figure prominently.<\/p>\n<p>These next\u00a0four photos document the lighting strategy of 1908: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electrolier\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Electroliers<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 Four massive, cast iron,\u00a0all-electric chandeliers holding numerous lights are suspended from the ceiling, each fixture weighing\u00a0over two tons.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7019 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2.jpg?resize=800%2C720&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"2\" width=\"800\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2.jpg?w=832&amp;ssl=1 832w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2.jpg?resize=300%2C270&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2.jpg?resize=768%2C691&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2.jpg?resize=167%2C150&amp;ssl=1 167w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2.jpg?resize=150%2C135&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a>The detail on these fixtures is amazing, and it continues the agricultural theme (even if I pattern-matched it to sea horses and dragons).
