According to the 2012 edition of the <i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Random House Dictionary\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Random_House_Dictionary\">Random House Dictionary<\/a><\/i>, cognomen can mean a &#8220;surname&#8221; or &#8220;any name, especially a nickname.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognomen#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> So the basic sense in English is &#8216;how one is well known.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Catalan language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catalan_language\">Catalan<\/a> cognom and <a title=\"Italian language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_language\">Italian<\/a> cognome, derived from the Latin cognomen, mean &#8220;family name.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The term &#8220;cognomen&#8221; can also be applied to cultures with a clan structure and naming conventions comparable to those of Ancient Rome; thus, hereditary &#8220;cognomina&#8221; have been described as in use among the <a title=\"Xhosa people\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xhosa_people\">Xhosa<\/a> (<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Iziduko\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iziduko\">Iziduko<\/a>), the <a title=\"Yoruba people\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yoruba_people\">Yoruba<\/a> (<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Oriki\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oriki\">Oriki<\/a>), or the <a title=\"Zulu people\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zulu_people\">Zulu<\/a> (<a title=\"Isibongo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isibongo\">Isibongo<\/a>).
