It’s been a surreal<\/em> year, and now it just got a little bit more surreal – but this time it doesn’t involved Donald Trump, but instead our next diplomat extraordinaire – Lindsey Lohan<\/i>. Amberin Zaman reports <\/a>for AL Monitor<\/b><\/i>:<\/p>\n

Over the past week, images of the American\u00a0actress, singer and\u00a0model visiting Syrian refugee camps \u2014 cradling babies and sporting an Islamic-style headscarf \u2014\u00a0have been splashed across the pages of pro-government media outlets. Lohan’s\u00a0compatriot Angelina Jolie has visited the same refugee camps along the Syrian border\u00a0several times, but she never\u00a0elicited\u00a0the gushing enthusiasm afforded Lohan.Why the discrepancy? Because Lohan has waded into Turkish politics in a big way, spouting, among other things,\u00a0one of\u00a0President Recep Tayyip Erdogan\u2019s worthier mantras: \u201cThe world is bigger than five.\u201d<\/p>\n

For\u00a0Lohan’s\u00a0American fans who need help deciphering Erdogan’s shorthand,\u00a0it means the permanent membership of the UN Security Council should be expanded beyond its current five states, ostensibly to include Turkey. The fate of millions of people<\/a>, Lohan solemnly observed in an interview with the pro-Erdogan ATV channel,\u00a0should not be decided by\u00a0five countries.<\/p>\n

In another interview,\u00a0with\u00a0pro-government newspaper Haberturk, Lohan praised Erdogan<\/a> for his handling of the July 15<\/span><\/span> coup attempt. The Turkish people truly respected him, she said. Lohan also gave Turkey\u2019s tottering tourism industry a boost, asserting, \u201cTurkey is a very safe and livable country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nothing, however,\u00a0will have won over more Turks than her tweeting \u201cTer\u00f6r\u00fc Lanetliyoruz<\/a>,\u201d which translates,\u00a0\u201cWe curse terrorism.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
