Sue Moore<\/a> at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Seattle has analysed 30 years of whale survey information gathered in the Chukchi Sea \u2013 which separates Russia and Alaska \u2013 and the surrounding area. She realised that three species of plankton-eating baleen whales \u2013 humpback, fin and minke \u2013 are now routinely spotted in the region, even though surveys in the 1980s never encountered these species there.<\/p>\n

The population of bowheads \u2013 a baleen whale native to the Arctic \u2013 may also be thriving<\/a>, according to Moore\u2019s analysis (Biology Letters<\/i>, DOI: 10.1098\/rsbl.2016.0251<\/a>).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
