The latest winner of the pants-on-fire award is former US presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AlisynCamerota\/videos\/10153845308112547\/\">interview<\/a> with CNN after a speech in which Donald Trump wrongly claimed that violent crime was rising, Gingrich cherry-picked the facts \u2013 then abandoned them altogether. \u201cThe average American does not think crime is down,\u201d he said. \u201cAs a political candidate, I\u2019ll go with what people feel.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In someone <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newt_Gingrich#Early_life.2C_family.2C_and_education\" target=\"_blank\">who claims to be an intellectual<\/a>, this is exceptionally depressing and discouraging.
