It is commonly seen or represented through iconography as performed by ruling elites in highly ritualized ceremonies, but it was easily practiced in mundane sociocultural contexts (i.e., non-elites could perform autosacrifice). The act was typically performed with <a title=\"Obsidian\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Obsidian\">obsidian<\/a> <a title=\"Prismatic blade\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prismatic_blade\">prismatic blades<\/a> or <a title=\"Stingray injury\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stingray_injury#Biological_structure_of_the_barb\">stingray spines<\/a>, and blood was drawn from piercing or cutting the <a title=\"Tongue\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tongue\">tongue<\/a>, <a title=\"Earlobe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earlobe\">earlobes<\/a>, and\/or <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Genitals\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genitals\">genitals<\/a> (among other locations). Another form of autosacrifice was conducted by pulling a rope with attached thorns through the tongue or earlobes. The blood produced was then collected on paper held in a bowl.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mesoamerica#Autosacrifice\" target=\"_blank\">Mesoamerica &#8211; Autosacrifice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s not what I had expected.
