The purpose is to admit light, fresh air, or both.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, <i>clerestory<\/i> denoted an upper level of a Roman <a title=\"Basilica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basilica\">basilica<\/a> or of the <a title=\"Nave\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nave\">nave<\/a> of a <a title=\"Romanesque architecture\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romanesque_architecture\">Romanesque<\/a> or <a title=\"Gothic architecture\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gothic_architecture\">Gothic<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Church (building)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Church_(building)\">church<\/a>, the walls of which rise above the rooflines of the lower <a title=\"Aisle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aisle\">aisles<\/a> and are pierced with windows.
