It involves reading a list of related words \u2013 such as bed, night, dream \u2013 to a participant but not the key word linking them together, in this case, sleep. When the person is later quizzed on the words they have heard, they tend to believe they have also heard \u201csleep\u201d \u2013 a false memory.<\/p>\n<p>To create the feeling of d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu, O\u2019Connor\u2019s team first asked people if they had heard any words beginning with \u201cs\u201d. The volunteers replied that they hadn\u2019t. This meant that when they were later asked if they had heard the word sleep, they knew that they couldn\u2019t have, but the word still felt familiar. \u201cThey report having this strange experience of d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu,\u201d says O\u2019Connor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>fMRI scan indicate the decision making areas of the brain are active during d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu, suggesting\u00a0d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu to be an indication that an error checking system is signaling there may be problem with your memory.
