Today WaPo <\/b><\/i>is reporting <\/a>good news about a long dormant thread<\/a>!<\/p>\n

The Justice Department plans to end its use of private prisons after officials\u00a0concluded the facilities are both less safe and less effective at providing correctional services than those run by the government.<\/p>\n

Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates announced the decision on Thursday<\/span><\/span> in a memo that instructs officials to either decline to renew the contracts for private prison operators when they expire or \u201csubstantially reduce\u201d the contracts\u2019 scope. The goal, Yates wrote, is \u201creducing \u2014 and ultimately ending \u2014 our use of privately operated prisons.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey simply do not provide the same level of correctional services, programs, and resources; they do not save substantially on costs; and as noted in a recent report by the Department\u2019s Office of Inspector General, they do not maintain the same level of safety and security,\u201d Yates wrote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In summary …<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact of the matter is that private prisons don\u2019t compare favorably to Bureau of Prisons facilities in terms of safety or security or services, and now with the decline in the federal prison population, we have both the opportunity and the responsibility to do something about that,\u201d Yates said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This only applies at the Federal level, so State prisons may still be privately run. It’s not a sudden cutoff, but implemented as contracts run their course. But it’s a necessary step.<\/p>\n

My only regret is that the official memo cites failings of the prisons, rather than the fundamental problem that private operators are not oriented towards the government goals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
