The goal, Yates wrote, is \u201creducing \u2014 and ultimately ending \u2014 our use of privately operated prisons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey simply do not provide the same level of correctional services, programs, and resources; they do not save substantially on costs; and as noted in a recent report by the Department\u2019s Office of Inspector General, they do not maintain the same level of safety and security,\u201d Yates wrote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In summary &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe fact of the matter is that private prisons don\u2019t compare favorably to Bureau of Prisons facilities in terms of safety or security or services, and now with the decline in the federal prison population, we have both the opportunity and the responsibility to do something about that,\u201d Yates said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This only applies at the Federal level, so State prisons may still be privately run. It&#8217;s not a sudden cutoff, but implemented as contracts run their course. But it&#8217;s a necessary step.<\/p>\n<p>My only regret is that the official memo cites failings of the prisons, rather than the fundamental problem that private operators are not oriented towards the government goals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today WaPo is reporting good news about a long dormant thread!
