Loathing for experts and specialists, people who know how to properly do things, comes through loud and clear in this incident:

Ordinarily, moving historical items[, such as General Eisenhower’s globes used during World War II,] within the building is a deliberate process overseen by trained curators. Instead, Hegseth’s staff dispatched its own team to relocate an Eisenhower globe. They lost control of the artifact and dropped it, sending the globe crashing onto its base and impaling the fragile shell near Antarctica, according to those familiar with the incident. The resulting gash appears to be several inches wide. [WaPo]

A couple of pundits are trying to tether this to Hegseth’s blunders in Trump’s War, and it’s not much of a stretch. This Administration isn’t organized around merit, competency, expertise, or training. It’s organized around loyalty to Trump and his unstable temperament, and what is best thought of as arrogant amateurism: the inability to admit that someone might be better than oneself, and thus charging foolishly, arrogantly into situations that require real expertise.

Even if that’s moving an old globe. But that could be invading another country. But experts do not parade loyalty about, but rather their expertise, so arrogant amateurs won’t use them.

Yes, it’s funny. Cruelly funny. And the joke’s on us, and the world.
