By doing so, voters in the Show-Me State set a positive example for states around the country, turning away from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itep.org\/missouri-amendment-5-income-tax-elimination-sales-tax-increase\/\">what would have been one of the most damaging tax policy changes in any state in recent years<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Otherwise divided voters were united in rejecting redistributing taxes away from the wealthy, with just\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbiamissourian.com\/news\/elections\/election-results\/2026-missouri-primary-amendment-5\/html_aa224c5e-fc2b-47ff-af73-e4b444ef3b5f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">17 percent of voters<\/a>\u00a0casting their ballots in favor. Despite a well-funded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/missouriindependent.com\/2026\/07\/29\/campaign-spending-accelerates-as-missouri-primary-election-draws-near\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campaign<\/a>\u00a0and no signs of wholesale rejection of their elected leaders, Missourians across the state rejected their governor\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sgfcitizen.org\/government\/missouri-government-politics\/springfield-state-of-the-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biggest priority<\/a>.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/itep.org\/missouri-voters-reject-amendment-5-and-a-damaging-tax-shift-onto-working-families\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ITEP<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A symptom of one of the toxic influences on Republican politics. If rich people want to reduce their relative tax burden, then raise corporate taxes. They&#8217;ll pass on their additional tax burden to their customers, because <em>heaven forbid<\/em> their investors take the hit, and it&#8217;ll be quite popular.<\/p>\n<p>If the Republicans want to become unpopular, keep on trying to undertax the wealthy. It&#8217;s a bit like splashing one&#8217;s self with hot tar and then jumping in a lake.
