It begins with\u00a0<a id=\"mwCQ\" title=\"Menstruation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Menstruation\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\">menses<\/a>\u00a0(day 1\u20137) during the\u00a0<a id=\"mwCg\" title=\"Follicular phase\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Follicular_phase\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\">follicular phase<\/a>\u00a0(day 1\u201314), followed by\u00a0<a id=\"mwCw\" title=\"Ovulation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ovulation\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\">ovulation<\/a>\u00a0(day 14) and ending with the\u00a0<b id=\"mwDA\">luteal phase<\/b>\u00a0(day 14\u201328). While historically, medical experts believed the luteal phase to be relatively fixed at approximately 14 days (i.e. days 14\u201328),\u00a0recent research suggests that there can be wide variability in luteal phase lengths not just from person to person, but from cycle to cycle within one person.\u00a0The luteal phase is characterized by changes to hormone levels, such as an increase in\u00a0<a id=\"mwGQ\" title=\"Progesterone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Progesterone\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\">progesterone<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a id=\"mwGg\" title=\"Estrogen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Estrogen\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\">estrogen<\/a>\u00a0levels, decrease in\u00a0<a id=\"mwGw\" title=\"Gonadotropin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gonadotropin\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\">gonadotropins<\/a>\u00a0such as\u00a0<a id=\"mwHA\" title=\"Follicle-stimulating hormone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Follicle-stimulating_hormone\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\">follicle-stimulating hormone<\/a>\u00a0(FSH) and\u00a0<a id=\"mwHQ\" title=\"Luteinizing hormone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luteinizing_hormone\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\">luteinizing hormone<\/a>\u00a0(LH), changes to the\u00a0<a id=\"mwHg\" title=\"Endometrium\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Endometrium\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\">endometrial lining<\/a>\u00a0to promote\u00a0<a id=\"mwHw\" title=\"Implantation (embryology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Implantation_(embryology)\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\">implantation<\/a>\u00a0of the fertilized egg, and development of the\u00a0<a id=\"mwIA\" title=\"Corpus luteum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corpus_luteum\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\">corpus luteum<\/a>.
