“What did you say about my mother?”<\/p><\/div>\n

The Monolith Monsters<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (1957) is that rare thing: a B-list science fiction movie that, every time you think about the science, it’s … plausible. A meteorite hits Earth in the American southwest and spreads rubble near San Angelo, CA. Or at least it’s rubble until it is wetted, and then, due to an exotic chemical reaction, it begins growing.<\/p>\n

No, it doesn’t grow into a kaiju<\/em><\/a>, but into an obelisk<\/em><\/a>, a tall tower of material that will eventually collapse under its own weight and creates more of the deadly rubble.<\/p>\n

While medical researchers frantically search for the key to the chemical reaction and how it sucks important material out of the human body, town leaders search for a way to save the town, and possibly the entire human race, from the menace of this exotic material.<\/p>\n

And will they succeed? There’s this strange taste of this being a dated film, mostly due to the old-fashioned concept of how an American society ought to function, and so that tainted the movie to an extent. But if you can ignore that, it’s a tense member of the How do we fix <\/em>this problem<\/em> genre.<\/p>\n
