DO YOU REALLY WANT TO FOCUS THE PUBLIC LIKE THIS?<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Trump sure loves a circus, however he defines it, and this may be something that impressed him in his youth:<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Republicans will hold their first-ever national convention ahead of\u00a0November\u2019s midterm elections<\/a><\/span>, an unusual event aimed at boosting turnout in races that will decide whether the party maintains control of Congress.<\/p>\n

The convention will be held in Dallas on Sept. 9 and 10.<\/p>\n

Although both major parties traditionally hold blockbuster conventions during presidential campaigns, Trump has long floated the idea of a similar gathering this year to focus voters\u2019 attention on a sprawling collection of House and Senate races. [AP<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Ah, a political convention. Fanatical fans, er, delegates<\/em>. Speeches, clapping, adoration, and the learned analysis afterwards. How can a man with pathological narcissism and probably dementia resist? It’ll be just like the conventions of his youth: drama, horse-trading, maybe a murder or two…<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>However, reminding voters of the President and Party that have brought economic ruin, artificial intelligence, data centers, and war down on their heads doesn’t strike me as a wise approach to the midterms.\u00a0But he loves that sweet and delicious attention, no matter how much it costs Republicans.<\/p>\n

So is this a convention that’ll cost Republicans a Senate seat or two, or will the Democrats’ shift to the left, with Mamdani’s New York City victory and progressive candidates who don’t realize that left extremism has no more appeal to the independents than right extremism, negate the potential pickup?<\/p>\n

HOW ABOUT VOTING AT ALL?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Will the SAVE Act<\/strong> become law? Speaker Johnson (D-LA) claims so, but retiring Senator Tillis (R-NC) strongly disagrees:<\/p>\n

Sen.\u00a0Thom Tillis\u00a0<\/a><\/span>(R-N.C.) says the\u00a0SAVE America Act,<\/a>\u00a0President Trump\u2019s\u00a0<\/a><\/span>No. 1 legislative priority, is \u201cdead\u201d on Capitol Hill because there is not enough time to change election laws before the midterms \u2014 even if Senate Republicans muster 60 votes\u00a0for the legislation<\/a>, which is unlikely.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnless they do the work to get to the 60 votes, they know it\u2019s dead, and so all this is theater,\u201d Tillis told The News & Observer, repeating arguments he has made in Washington calling on GOP colleagues to move on to other priorities.
