{"id":45005,"date":"2026-06-01T07:48:43","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T12:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=45005"},"modified":"2026-07-07T00:09:46","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T05:09:46","slug":"the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/06\/01\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-22\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2026 Senate Campaign: Updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ADMIN NOTE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This post is out of order due to a bug in WordPress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ABANDON APPEAL IN FAVOR OF SUPPRESSION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Trump has been beating back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ms.now\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/republican-criticism-iran-policy-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">internal <em><strong>GOP<\/strong><\/em> opposition<\/a> to <em>Trump&#8217;s Failed War<\/em>, but he may be trading approval for control, and that doesn&#8217;t go over well in a country for which a strong streak of persuasion supposedly lurks. Worse yet, certain Senators that are generally aligned with the President, but have voiced disillusionment with the <em>Failed War<\/em>, may be smarting in the backlash. Senators Wicker (R-MS) and Cotton (R-AR) are mentioned in the above article.<\/p>\n<p>But certainly victim Senator Cassidy (R-LA) returned fire:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to two sources, Trump eventually told Cassidy to sit down, but Cassidy refused. He raised his voice even higher. Trump responded by calling Cassidy a \u201clunatic.\u201d Cassidy referred to Trump as \u201cbrother,\u201d prompting Trump to reply that he wasn\u2019t his \u201cbrother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., tried to deescalate the situation, and other senators quietly encouraged Cassidy to sit down.<\/p>\n<p>After the meeting, however, Cassidy showed no signs of backing down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI make no apologies for standing up to the president, if you will, trying to demand that more information be shared with the Senate and more information be shared with the American people,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cI make no apologies for that.\u201d<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ms.now\/news\/inside-trump-closed-door-clash-senate-republicans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>MS NOW<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The domestic activity drawing the attention of voters may be the affordability solution, aka the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.banking.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/section-by-section_for_the_21st_century_road_to_housing_act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">21st Century ROAD to Housing Act<\/a><\/strong>. It&#8217;s a rare bipartisan victory for either side, but, notably, the Democrats chose not to spoil it because they are closer to governing, rather than throwing a temper tantrum. President Trump was all set to sign it, until &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116805545512296111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he wasn&#8217;t<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Today\u2019s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency. A veto carries the risk of an override, a humiliation he&#8217;ll never endure maturely.<\/p>\n<p>By trading a sure victory by signing the bill for the doubtful passage of a bill, reportedly designed to suppress voters who are not prepared with proper identification, that would be an immediate target of Federal lawsuits asking for emergency suspension of the law, President Trump is holding out of reach a Senate <em><strong>GOP<\/strong><\/em> lifeline for incumbents that might have saved their bacon. In a sentence, Trump once again proves that he expects loyalty to flow to him and not to his minions, once he&#8217;s bought them, whether it be via helping them win a seat, or absolving them of a crime.<\/p>\n<p>This is a common occurrence, of course. The <em><strong>GOP<\/strong><\/em> is in a difficult position when President Trump gets an idea in his head and lets it supersede everything else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PRE-ERRATA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I believe all references to <em><strong>Siena College<\/strong><\/em>, below, should be read as <em><strong>June 2026 [The New York] Times\/Siena Poll<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AND IN THE CATEGORY OF AUTHORITARIAN PARTY ON AUTHORITARIAN PARTY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/06\/15\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas<\/a> comes this <em><strong>UTexas<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/texaspolitics.utexas.edu\/blog\/june-poll-finds-a-competitive-u-s-senate-race-in-texas-amid-continuing-economic-concerns-data-center-backlash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> &#8230;<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>The latest University of Texas\/Texas Politics Project Poll finds a neck and neck contest in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/texaspolitics.utexas.edu\/set\/u-s-senate-trial-ballot-june-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the U.S. Senate race<\/a>\u00a0between Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and State Representative James Talarico, with Paxton the choice of 43% of Texas voters and Talarico preferred by a statistically indistinguishable 42%.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While I&#8217;m uncertain as to the polling competency of <em><strong>UTexas<\/strong><\/em>, I have no reason to consider them <em>biased<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But then there&#8217;s the quite respectable <em><strong>Siena College<\/strong><\/em>, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/06\/30\/polls\/times-siena-texas-poll-toplines.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> giving Paxton and Talarico both 47%, a big ol&#8217; tie. That Paxton isn&#8217;t being buried by his opponent is a sign that Talarico is <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KatieFrost318\/status\/2069453998881390717\">failing to inspire Texans with his virtue signaling<\/a>. Can Democrats learn from that their product isn&#8217;t selling? They seem too arrogant to do that just yet.<\/p>\n<p>But Republicans are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jun\/26\/texas-bible-required-reading-public-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forcing Texas children to read Bible stories in school<\/a>. That will alienate a lot of Texans from the Republicans.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/05\/16\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Carolina<\/a> may be over President Trump and the <em><strong>GOP<\/strong><\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catawba.edu\/news\/all-news\/2026\/yougov-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">From<\/a> highly respected <em><strong>YouGov<\/strong><\/em>, in conjunction with <em><strong>Catawba College<\/strong><\/em>:<br \/>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_45069\" style=\"width: 164px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-roy-cooper.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45069\" class=\"wp-image-45069\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-roy-cooper.jpg?resize=154%2C154&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"154\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-roy-cooper.jpg?w=351&amp;ssl=1 351w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-roy-cooper.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-roy-cooper.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 154px) 100vw, 154px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-45069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>On The Issues<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/ontheissues.org\/Roy_Cooper.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gov Roy Cooper (D-NC)<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Among the survey\u2019s 905 weighted likely voters, Cooper received 48 percent to Whatley\u2019s 34 percent, with 15 percent undecided at this point for November\u2019s U.S. Senate election. These findings are consistent to the results from March\u2019s survey, where Cooper lead by 15 points.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cooper&#8217;s advantage is not simply a function of Democratic support,&#8221; said Dr. Michael Bitzer, director of Catawba College&#8217;s Center for North Carolina Politics &amp; Public Service, which wrote and paid for the survey. &#8220;His lead is being driven by independents, who currently support him by more than two-to-one over Whatley. That independent vote can often be a decisive factor in statewide North Carolina elections.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is particularly noteworthy as Cooper is not a moderate, but a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/ontheissues.org\/Roy_Cooper.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Populist-Leaning Liberal,<\/a>&#8221; see above. His building a large lead over Mr Whatley suggests a state <em><strong>GOP<\/strong><\/em> that is falling into disrepute.<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina may have been gerrymandered in the past, but district lines do not track judgments over time; just thinking of such potential legislation makes me nauseous. So this is also <em>pertinent<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAnother noticeable dynamic is within the state\u2019s regions: while six in ten North Carolinians who live in major cities disapprove of Trump, 55 percent in urban suburbs and rural communities also disapprove. Trump performs best in the state&#8217;s exurban counties that surround the urban counties, where 54 percent approve and 44 percent disapprove,\u201d [Dr. Michael Bitzer, director of Catawba College&#8217;s Center for North Carolina Politics &amp; Public Service] noted.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The next Congressional delegation&#8217;s political makeup will be of considerable interest.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Siena College<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/07\/01\/polls\/times-siena-north-carolina-poll-toplines.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gives<\/a> Cooper a smaller lead of 50%-43%, but this is still significant in a state that Democrats have slavered over for years, yet not won either Senate seat in quite a while.<\/li>\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/06\/22\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan<\/a> <em><strong>Susquehanna Polling<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SusquehannaPR\/status\/2070211285778641393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gives<\/a> Ahmed El-Sayed (D) a 22%-20% edge, within the margin of error of 5%, over Rep Stevens (D), while state Senator McMorrow (D) is left at 9%.<\/li>\n<li>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/06\/15\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">State with an oversupply of Dan Sullivans<\/a>, Dan Sullivan is <a href=\"https:\/\/alaskapublic.org\/news\/politics\/elections\/2026-06-22\/petersburgs-dan-sullivan-sues-alaska-division-of-elections-after-being-removed-from-u-s-senate-ballot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suing<\/a> to be put on the Alaska Senate ballot with Dan Sullivan. The Alaska legislature is talking about accommodating solutions for Dan Sullivan, rather than fighting the Dan Sullivan lawsuit. Meanwhile, venerable <em><strong>Siena College<\/strong><\/em> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/07\/01\/polls\/times-siena-alaska-poll-toplines.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">splashing a bit of cold water<\/a> on the Democrats&#8217; party by giving Senator Dan Sullivan (R) a small 47%-45% lead, which is within the five point margin of error, over former Rep Mary Peltola (D).<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/United_States_Senate_election_in_Louisiana,_2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">27 June primary runoff<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/05\/21\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louisiana&#8217;s<\/a> U.S. Senate seat of Senator Cassidy (R) has concluded with the nominations of Rep Letlow (R), with a 56.9% share of the Republican runoff vote, and Jamie Davis (D), with a 79.9% share of the Democratic runoff vote. For those of us who want to compare numbers, Rep Letlow received 178,407 votes, while Mr Davis received 152,472 votes.If we take these numbers seriously, I do not know why Mr Davis cannot be expected to pick up most or all of those who voted for his rival, Gary Crockett, and the total number of votes for the Democratic primary runoff was 190,918, although I do not have a summation of Mr Crockett.\n<div id=\"attachment_45047\" style=\"width: 143px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-letlow.gif?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45047\" class=\"wp-image-45047\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-letlow.gif?resize=133%2C133&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"133\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-45047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>On The Issues<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/ontheissues.org\/House\/Julia_Letlow.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rep Letlow (R-LA).<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>But in the Republican column, the candidates were very different.\u00a0 Rep Letlow, despite an endorsement from President Trump, seems at least somewhat moderate, although the <em><strong>On The Issues<\/strong><\/em> summation is based on a paucity of data that may be misleading. State Treasurer Fleming, the Representative&#8217;s vanquished rival, is considered a hard right conservative. Will the latter&#8217;s backers vote for the Republican nominee regardless of positions? Will independents vote for the Republican if her position is not crystal clear?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45064\" style=\"width: 143px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-jamie-davis.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45064\" class=\"wp-image-45064\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-jamie-davis.jpg?resize=133%2C133&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"133\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-jamie-davis.jpg?w=351&amp;ssl=1 351w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-jamie-davis.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-jamie-davis.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 133px) 100vw, 133px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-45064\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>On The Issues<\/strong>: Senate candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/ontheissues.org\/Senate\/Jamie_Davis.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jamie Davis (D-LA)<\/a>.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>And then there&#8217;s Democratic candidate Jamie Davis. He has no experience with elective office, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Jamie_Davis_(Louisiana)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Ballotpedia<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, although his <em><strong>On The Issues<\/strong><\/em> summation, see right, is moderate and populist, which may be optimal this election. Will moderate Republicans and independents take a chance on him?<\/p>\n<p>I expect Letlow to win easily, but I could be wrong.<\/li>\n<li>A <em><strong>Siena College<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/07\/01\/polls\/times-pph-siena-maine-poll-toplines.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/06\/22\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maine<\/a> gives Graham Platner (D) a 49%-47% lead, well within the margin of error of 4.8 points. Platner is the fresh new thing, while Collins is experienced but probably out of warranty. If Platner manages to lose, a significant segment of the younger Democrats will have a blot on their record which may inhibit future intra-party maneuvering, despite progressive celebrations over successfully primarying older incumbents.And <em><strong>Fox News<\/strong><\/em>, highly respected in polling, is <a href=\"https:\/\/static.foxnews.com\/foxnews.com\/content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/fox_june-23-27-2026_complete_maine_topline_june-30-release.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">giving<\/a> Senator Collins a 50%-47% lead over Platner, within the margin of error of \u00b13 points. This is a tight race, and Platner may not be up to the job unless Collins makes a prominently poor decision in the Senate.<\/li>\n<li>A <em><strong>Saint Anselm College\/UNH<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.270towin.com\/uploads\/saint-anselm-june-2026.pdf\">poll<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/04\/24\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Hampshire<\/a> voters gives Rep Pappas (D) a 47%-41% lead over former Senator Sununu (R), the brother of Governor Sununu (R). The New Hampshire primary has not yet been held, and the poll has further results, but these two appear to be the favorites.<\/li>\n<li>A <em><strong>University of New Hampshire<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/scholars.unh.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1972&amp;context=survey_center_polls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> gives Senator Markey a 41%-35% lead in the Democratic <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/06\/22\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Massachusetts<\/a> primary over Rep Moulton. Both have a substantial lead over the only Republican in the Republican primary, Michael Deaton (R), in the same poll. Whoever wins the Democratic primary will win the general election, <em>sans<\/em> a black swan event. So will Moulton catch Markey by 1 September, which is the primary election date? This result is in contrast with an earlier <em><strong>Fox News<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/static.foxnews.com\/foxnews.com\/content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/fox_may-28-june-1-2026_complete_ohio_topline_june-3-release.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> showing <em>Brown<\/em> holding a 53% \u2013 45% lead.<\/li>\n<li>The 30 June Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/United_States_Senate_election_in_Colorado,_2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">primary<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/06\/09\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado<\/a> yielded unchallenged Republican state Senator Mark Baisley and the incumbent Senator, John Hickenlooper (D), who won his primary 56.7% &#8211; 43.3% over challenger Julie Gonzalez, which is closer than I suspect the Senator was expecting. The two victors move on to the general election, which also includes a horde of independent and small party candidates.
