Epiphragm<\/em>:<\/p>\n

An\u00a0epiphragm<\/b>\u00a0(from the\u00a0Ancient Greek<\/a>\u00a0\u1f10\u03c0\u03af<\/a>,\u00a0epi\u00a0<\/i>” upon, on, over ” and\u00a0\u03c6\u03c1\u03ac\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>,\u00a0-phr\u00e1gma\u00a0<\/i>“fence”) is a temporary structure which can be created by many species of shelled, air-breathing\u00a0land snails<\/a>,\u00a0terrestrial<\/a>\u00a0pulmonate<\/a>\u00a0gastropod<\/a>\u00a0mollusks<\/a>. It can also be created by\u00a0freshwater snails<\/a>\u00a0when\u00a0temporary pools<\/a>\u00a0dry up.<\/p>\n

In most species, the epiphragm is made of dried\u00a0mucus<\/a>, and although it is elastic, it is fairly easily torn when forcibly removing a snail from its substrate. In a few species, the epiphragm is thick and quite rigid, being reinforced with\u00a0calcium carbonate<\/a>. This kind of epiphragm is very strong and may be difficult to break.
