And while operatives are busy fixating on the attention economy or debating candidates\u2019 morality, it turns out that plain vanilla Democratic politics may actually be working.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat Iowa, North Carolina, Alaska are telling us is that the recipe is actually pretty simple: You find candidates with long, deep relationships in those states who understand those states, and then you let them run campaigns that are focused on those states rather than trying to nationalize everything,\u201d said Caitlin Legacki, a party strategist who is working with Schumer-backed Rep. Haley Stevens in the Michigan Senate primary.<\/p>\n<p>Always fractious, Democrats have debated how best to campaign while Trump occupies the White House, having argued about it since the earliest days of his first term. But this perennial argument has taken on added significance as the Platner saga rumbles on. Disagreements that were once about campaign strategy have turned into fights over whether key issues or candidate morality even matter at all.<\/p>\n<p>The contrast is remarkable. As Platner\u2019s defenders have invested themselves in making him an avatar of a new type of populist politics, other Democrats running for Senate have been strikingly conventional. This includes several issues surrounding transgenderism of the young, such as child surgeries, <em>language imperialism<\/em><sup><a href=\"#1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>, and dubious, at least to the average voter, sexual teachings<sup>[see 1 again]<\/sup>; defunding the police; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Identity_politics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>identity politics<\/em><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2021\/11\/27\/straying-from-the-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abrogation of the basic tenets of liberal democracy<\/a>; and other attention-getters that are ultimately viewed negatively by voters.<\/p>\n<p>If they don&#8217;t, the Democrats run the risk of becoming an irrelevancy, replaced by a more moderate Party.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, that applies to the Republicans as well. Even moreso.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE FUMBLING ABOUT CONTINUES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>GOP<\/strong><\/em> Senate candidates are beginning to move away from the President, as they sense he&#8217;s toxic to their job prospects:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While Senate GOP leaders successfully quashed much of that dissent, the days of bitter wrangling exposed cracks in Trump\u2019s base of support on Capitol Hill. There is now a growing chorus of Republicans \u2014 and not just the usual defectors \u2014 willing to defy him as they seek to rein in his pursuit of his agenda, ranging from projects like the White House ballroom and exacting political retribution on his enemies to his handling of the Iran war and other foreign policy issues. The trend is only expected to accelerate as the November elections approach, with contentious fights ahead like Trump\u2019s push to confirm his controversial expected pick to lead the Department of Justice.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/06\/politics\/republicans-defy-trump-agenda-midterms?iid=cnn_buildContentRecirc_end_recirc&amp;recs_exp=most-popular-article-end&amp;tenant_id=popular.en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CNN<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So much for dominating the businessmen\/jellyfish he arranged to have elected. And &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmq13it8b00053b6rtn1burae@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\u201cThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/23\/middleeast\/iran-us-progress-framework-diplomacy-intl\">negotiations<\/a>\u00a0are at a deadlock and (US President Donald) Trump must break this deadlock,\u201d Mohsen Rezaei, military adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, told CNN in an exclusive interview in Tehran. \u201cThe ball is in Trump\u2019s court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmq13it8c00063b6r0r97t4v9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">Iran has reportedly demanded the release of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/02\/world\/live-news\/iran-trump-israel-lebanon-war-intl-hnk#cmpwgchhj000k3b6olts108z3\">$12 billion in frozen funds<\/a>\u00a0as soon as an interim agreement is signed with the US, and another $12 billion at a later stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmq13it8c00073b6rx0606um4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/03\/politics\/monetary-compensation-iran-deal\">US officials are concerned<\/a> that any unfreezing of funds at this stage could remove a key leverage point over the regime. Trump has demanded that any agreement appear far stronger than the nuclear deal struck in 2015, and to avoid anything that could be construed as handing over \u201cpallets of cash,\u201d a phrase he has invoked to criticize then-President Barack Obama\u2019s decision to give Tehran financial compensation.\u00a0<em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/05\/middleeast\/iran-supreme-leader-adviser-mohsen-rezaei-interview-intl?iid=cnn_buildContentRecirc_end_recirc&amp;recs_exp=most-popular-article-end&amp;tenant_id=popular.en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CNN<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmq13it8c00073b6rx0606um4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">I expect the Iranians will dig in their heels until Trump rolls over for them, because that&#8217;s what he does. <em><strong>GOP<\/strong><\/em> Senate candidates will have to work the tightrope of infuriated independent voters and infuriated <strong>MAGA<\/strong> voters if they hope to win, and that&#8217;ll be a trick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CURVE BALLS GALORE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/06\/04\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Last week was a slider, I think.<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All eyes are on <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/06\/01\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-18\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maine<\/a> as their primary approaches, and now that upstart oyster farmer kGraham Platner (D) nearly has the Democratic Senate nomination in his grasp, will it slip away? This is not encouraging for Platner fans:<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>Maine Senate candidate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ms.now\/news\/graham-platner-maine-senate-susan-collins\">Graham Platner\u00a0<\/a>denied some of the new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ms.now\/news\/graham-platner-former-girlfriends-accusations-maine-democrat\">wave of allegations<\/a>\u00a0during an interview Thursday with MS NOW\u2019s Chris Hayes, his first national interview following a New York Times report detailing his past relationships.<\/p>\n<p>The interview came hours after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/04\/us\/politics\/platner-maine-senate-girlfriends-relationships.html\">the\u00a0Times report detailed accounts from several\u00a0<\/a>women who had been romantically involved with Platner. The report, based on interviews with more than two dozen people, including six former romantic partners, described sharply different experiences with the Democrat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some allegations in this piece that I just want to be kind of unequivocal about, are simply not true. Anything alleging physicality, anything alleging that I knew what my tattoo was, these are the statements of someone who\u2019s politically motivated,\u201d Platner said to Hayes.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ms.now\/news\/simply-not-true-graham-platner-denies-latest-allegations-on-ms-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>MS NOW<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Senator Hassan (D-NH) is <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/andrewdesiderio\/status\/2062794757265404268?s=46&amp;t=wdztPj3wo1pcELwTLstSAQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alarmed<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) on Graham Platner amid latest allegations: \u201cReports of threatening behavior and antisemitism like the ones made against Graham Platner are serious and deserve scrutiny. It\u2019s also critical to acknowledge how difficult this is for the women who\u2019ve come forward. Character matters now more than ever, and any high-profile campaign including Mr. Platner\u2019s involves the close examination of a candidate\u2019s history, statements and behavior, as well as the candidate\u2019s reaction to the pressure that such examination entails. Ultimately the people of Maine will decide who has the character and judgment to best represent them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Progressives may howl over the press reports &#8211; &#8220;traitors&#8221; might be the word <em>du jour<\/em> &#8211; but <em>warts and all<\/em> is apropos for reportage here. As noted in an earlier post, Platner&#8217;s primary competition, Governor Mills (D), hasn&#8217;t actually withdrawn from the ballot, and she could still be chosen as nominee, either by voters or by default. The last poll result I&#8217;ve seen for the Democratic primary was from the <em><strong>University of New Hampshire<\/strong><\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/scholars.unh.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1959&amp;context=survey_center_polls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gave<\/a> Platner a 76% &#8211; 10% lead over Gov Mills, and that&#8217;s no typo. That&#8217;d be a heckuva comeback for Mills, and should scare the bejeesus out of Senator Collins (R).<\/p>\n<p>Finally, highly respected <em><strong>UMass-Lowell<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uml.edu\/news\/press-releases\/2026\/06042026-maine-senate-poll.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has<\/a> Platner up 48%-43% over incumbent Senator Collins, but this poll may have been conducted prior to these allegations.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-annie-andrews.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-44803 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-annie-andrews.jpg?resize=163%2C163&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-annie-andrews.jpg?w=351&amp;ssl=1 351w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-annie-andrews.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/oti-annie-andrews.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 163px) 100vw, 163px\" \/><\/a>The Citadel Poll<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/poll.citadel.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/The-Citadel-SC-Voter-Survey-May-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggests<\/a> Senator Graham&#8217;s (R) lead in the South Carolina is only ten points, 46% &#8211; 36%, over businessman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lynchforsenate.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Lynch<\/a> (R), who does not seem to have any experience in electoral politics. If accurate, that&#8217;s a surprise, but <em><strong>The Citadel Poll<\/strong><\/em> is unfamiliar to me. A quick glance at Lynch&#8217;s website reveals a cookie-cutter far-right platform.<\/li>\n<li>Any problem with passing that on verbaThe same poll gives inexperienced <a href=\"https:\/\/drannieandrews.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Annie Andrews<\/a> (D), MD, a 45% share of the potential Democratic primary votes, followed by Undecided at 36% and Brandon Brown (D) at 14%. Her <em><strong>On The Issues<\/strong><\/em> summation right\/above <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontheissues.org\/Senate\/Annie_Andrews.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seems based on little data<\/a>, so I&#8217;m not inclined to ask the question, <em>Do South Carolinians really want to vote for someone so far left?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Maybe he just shouldn&#8217;t talk to anyone in <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/06\/01\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-18\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas<\/a>. The headline says it all:<br \/>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.notus.org\/2026-election\/ken-paxton-lawyer-james-talarico-endorsement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Ken Paxton\u2019s Impeachment Defense Lawyer Endorses James Talarico<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/06\/04\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan<\/a> Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/5913191-abdul-el-sayed-michigan-senate-race-uaw-endorsement\/?tbref=hp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scored an endorsement<\/a> from the <em><strong>UAW<\/strong><\/em> in the race for the open Michigan Senate seat.<\/li>\n<li>Ya know, I would have guessed any Senate campaign spending records would have been set in Texas. What do I know?<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has morphed from one of President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/news\/topic\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s fiercest Republican critics into one of his closest allies, is spending money like he\u2019s in political trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Graham has spent an astounding $27 million on his reelection campaign, according to Federal Election Commission filings, and that\u2019s even before his primary next week. His five GOP opponents \u2014 none of whom has a high statewide profile \u2015 combined have spent less than a fifth of that.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/lindsey-graham-27-million-primary-campaign_n_6a231675e4b0a18aef0c0c28?origin=home-latest-news-unit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>HuffPost<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Senator Graham seems safe enough in <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2026\/04\/15\/the-2026-senate-campaign-updates-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Carolina<\/a>, at least to me. As it happens, Senator Hickenlooper and Gonzales, a Colorado State Senator, are the only two surviving entrants in the Democratic primary. The Republican primary is down to one, a Colorado State Senator named <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Mark_Baisley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Baisley<\/a>. The primary is 30 June.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jon_Ossoff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senator Jon Ossoff<\/a> (D-GA) is emphasizing <em>corruption in the Republican Party<\/em> in his campaign, such as this lovely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xnj-2yfL13U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campaign ad<\/a>. It&#8217;s worth remembering that most candidates are lawyers, who can sometimes seem disconnected from the electorate. Senator Ossoff comes from a journalism background in which he helped create documentaries, among other projects, which means he remains connected to the electorate, and can communicate effectively with voters. Having seen that campaign ad, I won&#8217;t be surprised if he wins in a rout, given the apparent corruption of President Trump and <a href=\"https:\/\/ewerickson.substack.com\/p\/personnel-is-policy-aka-why-the-democrats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">likely opponent Rep Collins (R)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Today&#8217;s Senate primary elections are in Maine and South Carolina, both Republican seats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"1\"><\/a><sup>1<\/sup>Andrew Sullivan doesn&#8217;t use the phrase, but cites Gov Hochul (D-NY): &#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/andrewsullivan.substack.com\/p\/the-tq-threat-to-lgb-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cgestating parent\u201d and \u201cnon-gestating parent.\u201d<\/a>&#8221;, to which I can only say, <em>really, Guv&#8217;nr<\/em>?
