It can allegedly discover flaws in virtually any software, if asked, that would allow the user to break in.<\/p>\n<p>The company says that Mythos found thousands of high- and critical-severity vulnerabilities in operating systems and other software. Anthropic did not respond to\u00a0<em>New Scientist\u2019<\/em>s request for comment, but the company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/glasswing\">said on its website<\/a> that \u201cthe fallout\u2014for economies, public safety, and national security\u2014could be severe.\u201d<em> [&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2524008-do-you-need-to-worry-about-mythos-anthropics-computer-hacking-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Do you need to worry about Mythos, Anthropic&#8217;s computer-hacking AI?<\/a>&#8220;]<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But this is &#8230; reassuring, I suppose:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But there are indications that it isn\u2019t time to panic yet. Bobby Holley\u00a0at Firefox \u2013 one of those organisations being given access to Mythos \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/en\/privacy-security\/ai-security-zero-day-vulnerabilities\/\">wrote in a blog post<\/a>\u00a0that the model helped his team find 271 vulnerabilities in the web browser, which is certainly quite a haul, but that none were so ingenious, impenetrably complex or sophisticated that a human couldn\u2019t have dug them out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust one such bug would have been red-alert in 2025, and so many at once makes you stop to wonder whether it\u2019s even possible to keep up,\u201d wrote Holley. \u201cEncouragingly, we also haven\u2019t seen any bugs that\u00a0<em>couldn\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0have been found by an elite human\u00a0researcher.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No magic here, at least not yet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had not heard about this, as I&#8217;ve been paying attention to politics and I keep ignoring &#8220;AI&#8221;, or machine learning.
