Debanking<\/em>:\u200b<\/p>\n

Debanking<\/b>\u00a0(sometimes spelled\u00a0de-banking<\/b>, and also known within the banking industry as\u00a0de-risking<\/b>) is the closure of people’s or organizations’\u00a0bank accounts<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0banks<\/a>\u00a0that perceive the account holders to pose a financial, legal, regulatory, or reputational risk to the bank.<\/p>\n

Examples of this include the enforcement of\u00a0anti-corruption<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0anti\u2013money laundering<\/a>\u00a0laws, the closing of bank accounts of\u00a0sex workers<\/a>,[<\/span>1]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and people considered to be\u00a0politically exposed persons<\/a>.<\/p>\n
