Metabolomics<\/em>:<\/p>\n

Metabolomics<\/b>\u00a0is the scientific study of chemical processes involving\u00a0metabolites<\/a>, the small molecule substrates, intermediates, and products of cell\u00a0metabolism<\/a>. Specifically, metabolomics is the “systematic study of the unique chemical fingerprints that specific cellular processes leave behind”, the study of their small-molecule metabolite profiles.\u00a0The\u00a0metabolome<\/a>\u00a0represents the complete set of metabolites in a biological cell, tissue, organ, or organism, which are the end products of cellular processes.\u00a0Messenger RNA<\/a>\u00a0(mRNA),\u00a0gene expression<\/a>\u00a0data, and\u00a0proteomic<\/a>\u00a0analyses reveal the set of\u00a0gene products<\/a>\u00a0being produced in the cell, data that represents one aspect of cellular function. Conversely, metabolic profiling can give an instantaneous snapshot of the physiology of that cell,\u00a0and thus, metabolomics provides a direct “functional readout of the physiological state” of an organism.\u00a0There are indeed quantifiable correlations between the metabolome and the other cellular ensembles (genome<\/a>,\u00a0transcriptome<\/a>,\u00a0proteome<\/a>, and\u00a0lipidome<\/a>), which can be used to predict metabolite abundances in biological samples from, for example mRNA abundances.\u00a0One of the ultimate challenges of\u00a0systems biology<\/a>\u00a0is to integrate metabolomics with all other\u00a0-omics<\/a>\u00a0information to provide a better understanding of cellular biology.
