Specifically, metabolomics is the &#8220;systematic study of the unique chemical fingerprints that specific cellular processes leave behind&#8221;, the study of their small-molecule metabolite profiles.\u00a0The\u00a0<a title=\"Metabolome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metabolome\">metabolome<\/a>\u00a0represents the complete set of metabolites in a biological cell, tissue, organ, or organism, which are the end products of cellular processes.\u00a0<a title=\"Messenger RNA\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Messenger_RNA\">Messenger RNA<\/a>\u00a0(mRNA),\u00a0<a title=\"Gene expression\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gene_expression\">gene expression<\/a>\u00a0data, and\u00a0<a title=\"Proteomics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proteomics\">proteomic<\/a>\u00a0analyses reveal the set of\u00a0<a title=\"Gene product\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gene_product\">gene products<\/a>\u00a0being produced in the cell, data that represents one aspect of cellular function. Conversely, metabolic profiling can give an instantaneous snapshot of the physiology of that cell,\u00a0and thus, metabolomics provides a direct &#8220;functional readout of the physiological state&#8221; of an organism.\u00a0There are indeed quantifiable correlations between the metabolome and the other cellular ensembles (<a title=\"Genome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genome\">genome<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Transcriptome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transcriptome\">transcriptome<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Proteome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proteome\">proteome<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Lipidome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lipidome\">lipidome<\/a>), which can be used to predict metabolite abundances in biological samples from, for example mRNA abundances.\u00a0One of the ultimate challenges of\u00a0<a title=\"Systems biology\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Systems_biology\">systems biology<\/a>\u00a0is to integrate metabolomics with all other\u00a0<a title=\"Omics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Omics\">-omics<\/a>\u00a0information to provide a better understanding of cellular biology.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metabolomics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Noted in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/interactive\/2025\/toxins-tech-tumors-is-modern-life-fueling-rise-cancer-millennials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>What researchers suspect may be fueling cancer among millennials<\/em><\/a>,&#8221; Ariana Eunjung Cha, \u00c1lvaro Vali\u00f1o and Dan Keating, <em><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Professor Gary Patti of Washington University School of Medicine] in St. Louis team is focused on metabolomics \u2014 the vast, largely unmapped study of the small molecules coursing through the human body.
