I recall <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rear_Window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Rear Window<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (1954) as being a tightly plotted mystery, as a woman disappears, someone else&#8217;s dog is found dead, all observed by a guy with a broken leg, watching his neighborhood from his rear window. (He&#8217;s a journalist, so of course he watches. It&#8217;s not creepy. At all.)<\/p>\n<p>But what&#8217;s going on?<\/p>\n<p>We binged our way through the first season of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Flight_Attendant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>The Flight Attendant<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (2020) over the last week. While in many ways completely unlike <em><strong>Rear Window<\/strong><\/em>, such as nearly incessant sex, it&#8217;s also full of themes and techniques essential to <em><strong>Rear Window<\/strong><\/em>, such as inexplicable occurrences, red herrings that, maybe, aren&#8217;t. And it starts off fast, and slow.<\/p>\n<p>Fast in that flight attendant Cassie wakes up next to a dead man in a hotel in Bangkok, his throat slit, guaranteed to get the adrenaline levels up.<\/p>\n<p>Slow in that the mystery seems eminently solvable.<\/p>\n<p>Right up until the unexpected inconsistencies smack you, and her, in the face. It just takes a little patience to get there. We nearly walked away. Then the interest heightens as Cassie starts running, right up until the double surprise ending.<\/p>\n<p>I hate the title.
