This is so unusual that it is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-024-58252-y\">understood by some as<\/a>\u00a0a psychological problem to be treated. However, over my 40 years as a clinical psychiatrist I have realised that for many of my patients (and for me) disinterest in group membership and assimilation isn\u2019t a psychological problem \u2013 it is simply a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg25333690-900-how-to-alter-your-personality-why-your-character-isnt-fixed-in-stone\/\">personality type<\/a>\u00a0that hasn\u2019t been recognised before.<\/p>\n<p>Otroverts is the term I use for those who don\u2019t feel the obligation to merge their identities with others.
