Ex ante<\/em>:<\/p>\n

The term\u00a0ex-ante<\/i><\/span><\/b>\u00a0(sometimes written\u00a0ex ante<\/i><\/span><\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0exante<\/i><\/span><\/b>) is a\u00a0New Latin<\/a> phrase meaning “before the event”.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0economics<\/a>,\u00a0ex-ante<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0notional demand<\/a>\u00a0refers to the desire for\u00a0goods and services<\/a>\u00a0that is not backed by the ability to pay for those goods and services. This is also termed as ‘wants<\/a>\u00a0of people’.<\/p>\n

Ex-ante<\/i>\u00a0is used most commonly in the\u00a0commercial world<\/a>, where results of a particular action, or series of actions, are forecast (or intended). The opposite of\u00a0ex-ante<\/i>\u00a0is\u00a0ex-post<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(actual) (or\u00a0ex post<\/i>). Buying a\u00a0lottery ticket<\/a>\u00a0loses you money\u00a0ex ante<\/i>\u00a0(in\u00a0expectation<\/a>), but if you win, it was the right decision\u00a0ex post<\/i>.
