{"id":4249,"date":"2016-07-19T22:55:57","date_gmt":"2016-07-20T03:55:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=4249"},"modified":"2016-07-19T22:55:57","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T03:55:57","slug":"rnc-second-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2016\/07\/19\/rnc-second-night\/","title":{"rendered":"RNC Second Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230; I was fortunately busy with other matters and only caught part of the very end of <em><strong>RNC-2<\/strong><\/em>, where <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ben_Carson\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Carson<\/a> seemed to think referencing &#8220;In God We Trust&#8221; on our currency has some sort of relevance to our successes &#8211; and failures &#8211; as a nation. I&#8217;m also curious why such a brilliant surgeon finds it so urgent to credit God with the successes of Man. Are the most reverent the most successful? There&#8217;s little correlation; and it&#8217;s disrespectful to those who&#8217;ve worked so hard to achieve so much. He&#8217;s basically telling them that all the time, effort, and discipline is irrelevant, since God really does it all. For those who can think clearly, and yet accept such an assertion, it must be quite the blow to one&#8217;s faith in the virtues of working hard.<\/p>\n<p>And reading Andrew Sullivan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/2016\/07\/andrew-sullivan-liveblogs-the-rnc-night-2.html\" target=\"_blank\">second night<\/a> of live-blogging, I must admit to feeling pity for him. He&#8217;s clearly feeling a lot of pain at watching the GOP melting into irrelevance. Read it backwards:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ciqu7vda900825dy7b7hgaq8m@published\">9:31 p.m. In the last few seconds, Paul Ryan got his mojo back in a call for unity. But the speech was painfully devoid of any praise for the nominee, and framed around supporting a \u201cconservative governing majority,\u201d rather than a president. Again, it\u2019s pretty amazing for the speaker of the House not to mention in more than a cursory way the actual nominee of his own party. Beyond Awkward. I bet you Trump is pissed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ciqu7p4kt009omqy8a57n2ab2@published\">9:27 p.m. Ryan is dying up there. A reader<span class=\"widont\">\u00a0<\/span>writes:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/components\/blockquote\/instances\/ciqu7q1qg00bs5ry6u5y4z52q@published\" data-editable=\"text\"><p>Paul Ryan\u2019s speech would be very good in 1988 or thereabouts. Today, it\u2019s just pathetic and utterly detached from the Trumpers who don\u2019t know whether to clap or not.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ciqu7qekr007fb9y971rhi31n@published\">He\u2019s now all but apologizing for speaking: \u201cLast. Last point \u2026\u201d Jesus this is<span class=\"widont\">\u00a0<\/span>depressing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ciqu7najv00815dy76fl6slxj@published\">9:26 p.m. A speaker actually mentioned \u201cliberties\u201d. Ryan is just offering some somewhat lame anti-progressive clich\u00e9s. The crowd is talking among<span class=\"widont\">\u00a0<\/span>themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ciqu7knz2009nmqy8c7ctclmd@published\">9:20 p.m. Ryan is trying to make a change election argument. So far, awkward. No mention of any policies proposed by<span class=\"widont\">\u00a0<\/span>Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ciqu7e8fz009lmqy8mtle61yk@published\">9:19 p.m. Ryan invokes Lincoln. Graves<span class=\"widont\">\u00a0<\/span>spin.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ciqu7e8fz009lmqy8mtle61yk@published\">While it may be enjoyable in a creepy sort of way, I&#8217;m dismayed that the best analogy for the <em><strong>RNC<\/strong><\/em> is to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elvira%27s_Movie_Macabre\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Elvira, Mistress of the Dark<\/em><\/a>, who made her name through, let us say, excess cleavage. Given the lies and appeals to the &#8220;fever swamps<span class=\"widont\">\u00a0<\/span>right&#8221; emotions, its really base nature and disdain for facts and truth, it&#8217;s really how it all seems to be. A vast orgasmic week for the resentful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ciqu7e8fz009lmqy8mtle61yk@published\">A number of GOP officials have avoided this year&#8217;s <em><strong>RNC<\/strong><\/em>, supposedly because of concerns about violence, although the idea of riots seems to have faded. I think that was just an excuse, and that most of them were so embarrassed at the thought of associating with Trump that they just decided to find a reason not to be present. It&#8217;ll be interesting to see how that plays out now that he&#8217;s the official nominee. Will they support him? Subtly chip away at him while trying to retain their elective seats?
