Jacquard machine<\/em>:<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Jacquard machine<\/b>\u00a0(French:<\/span>\u00a0[\u0292aka\u0281]<\/a><\/span>) is a device fitted to a\u00a0loom<\/a>\u00a0that simplifies the process of manufacturing\u00a0textiles<\/a>\u00a0with such complex patterns as\u00a0brocade<\/a>,\u00a0damask<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0matelass\u00e9<\/a>.\u00a0The resulting ensemble of the loom and Jacquard machine is then called a\u00a0Jacquard loom<\/b>. The machine was patented by\u00a0Joseph Marie Jacquard<\/a>\u00a0in 1804, based on earlier inventions by the Frenchmen\u00a0Basile Bouchon<\/a>\u00a0(1725), Jean Baptiste Falcon (1728), and\u00a0Jacques Vaucanson<\/a>\u00a0(1740).\u00a0The machine was controlled by a “chain of cards”; a number of\u00a0punched cards<\/a>\u00a0laced together into a continuous sequence.\u00a0Multiple rows of holes were punched on each card, with one complete card corresponding to one row of the design.<\/p>\n

Both the Jacquard process and the necessary loom attachment are named after their inventor. This mechanism is probably one of the most important\u00a0weaving<\/a>\u00a0innovations, as Jacquard\u00a0shedding<\/a>\u00a0made possible the automatic production of unlimited varieties of complex pattern weaving. The term “Jacquard” is not specific or limited to any particular loom, but rather refers to the added control mechanism that automates the patterning.
