Noted in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2025\/01\/28\/groups-renaming-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>This go-to term for teamwork is now a no-no for the snobbery police<\/em><\/a>,&#8221; Mark Lasswell, <em><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body grid-center grid-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"Y3LT7D6CCVAENN3AHLWWIYB7KE\" data-el=\"text\">It is historical societies, though, that seem especially intent on deeming \u201csociety\u201d unfit for society.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/10\/26\/arts\/artsspecial\/historical-institutions-update-their-brands.html\">Since the 2000s<\/a>, they\u2019ve been madly deaccessioning the word \u2014 the Chicago Historical Society became the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagohistory.org\/\">Chicago History Museum<\/a>; the Colorado Historical Society became\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.historycolorado.org\/\">History Colorado<\/a>; the Fairfield Historical Society in Connecticut became the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairfieldhistory.org\/\">Fairfield Museum and History Center<\/a>; and the Ohio Historical Society became the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohiohistory.org\/\">Ohio History Connection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"Y3LT7D6CCVAENN3AHLWWIYB7KE\" data-el=\"text\">Stretching <em>deaccessioning<\/em> out a bit, perhaps, but it&#8217;s understandable in context. Although, much like <em>got<\/em>, a word for which <em>has<\/em> is both a substitute and much more graceful, it&#8217;s awfully klunky, and leaves me wondering if, once again like got, if some other word has the same meaning and renders <em>deaccessioning<\/em> superfluous.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"Y3LT7D6CCVAENN3AHLWWIYB7KE\" data-el=\"text\">Try saying <em>deaccessioning<\/em> five times fast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deaccessioning: Deaccessioning is when objects and art in museums are permanently and formally removed from the museum\u2019s collections.
