{"id":41707,"date":"2024-12-31T09:28:41","date_gmt":"2024-12-31T15:28:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=41707"},"modified":"2025-04-05T08:26:39","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T13:26:39","slug":"thatll-be-a-world-sized-power-mixer-ctd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2024\/12\/31\/thatll-be-a-world-sized-power-mixer-ctd\/","title":{"rendered":"That\u2019ll Be A World-Sized Power Mixer, Ctd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2024\/12\/25\/thatll-be-a-world-sized-power-mixer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">popularity of <strong>artificial intelligence<\/strong><\/a> (<strong>AI<\/strong>), back in October Ted Gioia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honest-broker.com\/p\/how-virtual-reality-died\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">based on his successful prediction<\/a> that the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metaverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>metaverse<\/em><\/a> would be as popular as a capsized dinghy, which are my words, not his, is now predicting that artificial intelligence is the next big flop:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Guess what? These\u00a0<em>same four companies<\/em>\u2014Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Google\u2014have a new dream technology built on fakery.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s called artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>What an amazing coincidence! Do these four CEOs coordinate their moves in secret? Or are they just obsessed with imitating each other in some kind of warped\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.honest-broker.com\/p\/12-things-i-learned-from-rene-girard\" rel=\"\">Girardian way<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>But their AI plans aren\u2019t much different than the virtual reality debacle.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In VR, we go into a fake world to interact with real people.<\/li>\n<li>In AI, we remain in the real world but interact with fake people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s not much of an improvement. By my measure, it\u2019s actually a step backward.<\/p>\n<p>Reality is not something to trifle with. It always gets the last laugh.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given the companies named, he&#8217;s talking about generative AI, which I&#8217;ve mentioned seems like little more than a party trick to me. However, the starting post of this thread references claims that generative AI is now showing signs of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artificial_general_intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>artificial general intelligence<\/em><\/a><del>,<\/del>. If this is a true claim then Gioia may not be right.<\/p>\n<p>And other forms of artificial intelligence, or, more accurately, <strong>machine learning<\/strong> (<strong>ML<\/strong>), have already proven invaluable, from reading x-rays to spotting cancer to weather forecasting.<\/p>\n<p>Generative AI, since it&#8217;s basically a technology for digesting and summarizing a textual data source, may also have its place in the sun, as many academic disciplines experience such a volume of publications that researchers cannot keep up; <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2023\/07\/30\/oh-thats-interesting-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some even have implemented their own agents for digesting the river coming at them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The metaverse is, I think, a sponge for money that pretends to be a solution for ill-defined problems. AI? It&#8217;s already demonstrated some utility.
