So I thought, although the movie makers did a good job coming up with disturbing shapes for the architectural elements, and I did make it to the end relatively painlessly. But this movie is based on the book of the same title, by Olaf Stapledon, a British philosopher, from 1930, and a little reading in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olaf_Stapledon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/em><\/a> dredged this up:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Stapledon&#8217;s writings directly influenced\u00a0<a title=\"Arthur C. Clarke\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arthur_C._Clarke\">Arthur C. Clarke<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-15\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olaf_Stapledon#cite_note-15\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>15<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<a title=\"Brian Aldiss\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brian_Aldiss\">Brian Aldiss<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-16\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olaf_Stapledon#cite_note-16\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>16<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<a title=\"Stanis\u0142aw Lem\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stanis%C5%82aw_Lem\">Stanis\u0142aw Lem<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Bertrand Russell\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bertrand_Russell\">Bertrand Russell<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-17\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olaf_Stapledon#cite_note-17\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>17<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<a title=\"John Gloag\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Gloag\">John Gloag<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-18\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olaf_Stapledon#cite_note-18\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>18<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<a title=\"Naomi Mitchison\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naomi_Mitchison\">Naomi Mitchison<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-19\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olaf_Stapledon#cite_note-19\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>19<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<a title=\"C. S. Lewis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C._S._Lewis\">C. S. Lewis<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-20\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olaf_Stapledon#cite_note-20\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>20<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<a title=\"Vernor Vinge\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vernor_Vinge\">Vernor Vinge<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-21\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olaf_Stapledon#cite_note-21\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>21<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<a title=\"John Maynard Smith\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Maynard_Smith\">John Maynard Smith<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-22\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olaf_Stapledon#cite_note-22\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>22<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and indirectly influenced many others, contributing many ideas to the world of science fiction. Clarke wrote:<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_13-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olaf_Stapledon#cite_note-:0-13\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>13<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 1930 I came under the spell of a considerably more literate influence, when I discovered W. Olaf Stapledon&#8217;s just-published\u00a0<i>Last and First Men<\/i>\u00a0in the Minehead Public Library. No book before or since ever had such and impact on my imagination; the Stapledonian vistas of millions and hundreds of millions of years, the rise and fall of civilizations and entire races of men, changed my whole outlook on the universe and has influenced much of my writing ever since.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ideas such as a &#8220;supermind&#8221; composed of many individual consciousnesses forms a recurring theme in his work.\u00a0<i><a title=\"Star Maker\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Star_Maker\">Star Maker<\/a><\/i>\u00a0contains the first known description of what are now called\u00a0<a title=\"Dyson sphere\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dyson_sphere\">Dyson spheres<\/a>.\u00a0<a title=\"Freeman Dyson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freeman_Dyson\">Freeman Dyson<\/a>\u00a0credits the novel with giving him the idea, even stating in an interview that &#8220;Stapledon sphere&#8221; would be a more appropriate name.<sup id=\"cite_ref-23\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olaf_Stapledon#cite_note-23\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>23<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<i><a title=\"Last and First Men\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Last_and_First_Men\">Last and First Men<\/a><\/i>\u00a0features early descriptions of\u00a0<a title=\"Genetic engineering\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genetic_engineering\">genetic engineering<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-24\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olaf_Stapledon#cite_note-24\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>24<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Terraforming\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terraforming\">terraforming<\/a>.\u00a0<i><a title=\"Sirius (novel)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sirius_(novel)\">Sirius<\/a><\/i>\u00a0describes a dog whose intelligence is increased to the level of a human being&#8217;s. Stapledon&#8217;s work also refers to then-contemporary intellectual fashions (e.g. the belief in\u00a0<a title=\"Extrasensory perception\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extrasensory_perception\">extrasensory perception<\/a>).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>Last and First Men<\/strong><\/em> is a work of an influential early writer in the science fiction arena, almost a progenitor. This makes this movie more intriguing; it may even be a novel worth pursuing.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;ll not be winning any awards, but it does stir up some thoughts for the audience able to disregard its taste for adventure, rom-coms, period dramas, and other genres, and simply watch and think.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last And First Men (2020) examines an attempt by humanity, a couple of billion years in the future and facing an existential rupture of space-time, attempting to communicate with, well, us.
