Soon-to-be former Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) has a view that needs to be considered:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Why? Brown says the political shift in his state began with a signal event: the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1993, the first year of Bill Clinton\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorkers have slowly migrated out of the Democratic Party,\u201d he told [interviewer Jennifer Rubin]. \u201cIt accelerated as more and more jobs were lost. And I still heard [about NAFTA] in this campaign, especially in the Miami Valley, Dayton, where we still won, [and] up there in Mahoning Valley, where we didn\u2019t win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Workers came to view Democrats \u201cas a bicoastal elite party,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe were too pro-corporate. They know Republicans are going to shill for corporate interests. They expected Democrats would stand up for them, and they don\u2019t see that nationally.\u201d<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2024\/12\/22\/sherrod-brown-democrats-nafta-2024\/?utm_campaign=wp_post_most&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;carta-url=https%3A%2F%2Fs2.washingtonpost.com%2Fcar-ln-tr%2F40102c2%2F67683d4f9965465237938c0f%2F59ee10d9ae7e8a504fd8ecd3%2F27%2F52%2F67683d4f9965465237938c0f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <strong>NAFTA<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_American_Free_Trade_Agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>North American Free Trade Agreement<\/strong><\/a>) issue is painfully funny, because I recall President Bill Clinton (D) stealing the entire free trade issue from the Republicans way back when, and that theft quite probably contributed to the Republicans&#8217; hatred of President Clinton and his subsequent impeachment over trivial issues involving a blowjob. The real point is that the Republicans, if Clinton had not been involved, would have heartily endorsed <strong>NAFTA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But yes, it does seem like the Democrats have lost the back of the workers, despite President Biden&#8217;s efforts to boost unions during his term.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpds-c-PJLV article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"2LKYD2HBHVEQHJFZJOLHWU4DZI\" data-el=\"text\">But although he himself will no longer be there come January, Brown insists that Democrats can \u2014 and must \u2014 win back the votes of working-class Americans. Those voters may disagree with some of the party\u2019s stances on social issues, such as guns,\u00a0<a class=\"contextual_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/abortion\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion<\/a>, crime and immigration, but will return to the fold \u201cif we stay on economic issues and do it right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wpds-c-heFNVF wpds-c-heFNVF-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"2LKYD2HBHVEQHJFZJOLHWU4DZI\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cWe have to sharpen our message. I don\u2019t look at politics left and right. It\u2019s who\u2019s on your side,\u201d he said. \u201cWork really binds. I mean, what do we have in common? The term \u2018dignity of work\u2019 really cuts across all lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"width: 263px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/scylla.jpeg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"191\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>What American voters face.<\/em><br \/><em>(Yes, I know I&#8217;ve used this several times. It&#8217;s a favorite.)<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"2LKYD2HBHVEQHJFZJOLHWU4DZI\" data-el=\"text\">For workers, the jobs that don&#8217;t require college degrees, that take the workers down into mines and forty stories up tacking together buildings are very important &#8211; and the Democratic Party, steered by legitimate or illegitimate leaders more concerned with exotic ideologies, and burdened by a lack of knowledge concerning how liberal democracies work, managed to steer the Party onto the rocks of madness and leave American voters with a Party that feels autocratic and facing another Party that feels &#8230; autocratic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes the best information after a loss comes from the front-line folks, and in politics that&#8217;ll be the candidates, win or lose.
